Modern Steel Road Bike Appreciation Thread

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Carbon Rims on a Soma Smoothie

Nothing says modern like some carbon. Thinking about adding carbon finishing kit in the future.

Falcon90EX, that is a fine looking smoothie. I have a black one with 105 7000 group, Zonda wheels, not nearly as dressed up as yours. I sure do liking riding that bike, one of my two most comfortable rides. I am considering putting Velo-Orange Porteur bars on it. I think my days of drop bars are soon to be done. I have issues that have come much more of factor in my bike positioning. I have already done that to two other bikes, and they are now much more comfortable for me.

I am going to jump in here: the saddle is a Charge Spoon, the frame is Tange Prestige steel.

Both. Chromoly is shorthand for chromium molybdenum steel.

Why yes, they are actually. One that comes to mind is this one. I realize it's just one of those cheap-ass Rivendell bikes, but here it is. There are others.

It was sarcasm when he said "cheap ass".

Nice ride, but that's a lot of hardware just for a front light.

There's a front light, rear light, and a charger with a cache battery...I don't always carry stuff on the front

Read this whole thread the other day. Just got my 10th post and pic privileges. I think this one fits into the modern steel bike cat. 2010 Jamis Satellite with new seat, wheels, and 105 group set. Thinking of upgrading the fork, seat post, stem and handlebars soon with a newer carbon. All alloy still. Maybe even the wheels too, but the durable wheels on there now have been great. Hate getting flats.

Jamis doesn't get enough respect. I think they could have a sizable market selling just their steel frames. Sure they use generic 4130 DB chromoly tubesets that are assembled overseas, but so does Surly and several others. And actually I think most Jamis (like your Satelite) use branded tubing (Reynolds 520). I tried to buy a Coda Sport frame to build up for my wife, but couldn't. The components that come on the Coda Sport are kind of cheap, but the frame is fantastic, so I wanted to do a frame-up custom build.

Even their complete bikes are great values though. When friends or family are looking to buy a bike, I always tell them to at least look at Jamis before they buy something. I also advise them to buy steel, but that's just me.

The bike shop guys really pushed this one for beginners into road biking. It's been a great first road bike for me. So much so, that I plan to keep it until I break it. Changing out components is fun too, allowing you to see the difference each part makes.

You aren't really going to break it. The reason it's a good road bike for beginners is that they kept the cost down by choosing less expensive parts, that you may very well wear out or break. But the bicycle is the frame, which should should last forever. Everything else is replaceable and upgradeable. A nice DB chromoly frame like that is worthy of whatever upgrades you can afford, and you might just keep the bike forever.

Go look at what Surly charges for just a frame. People spend a lot of money building those up. Your frame is just as worthy.
