I got out for the first proper ride on my newly-built Mystery bike. It rode great. Really smooth and comfortable ride over fairly rough roads today. From Berkeley, I rode out east over the Berkeley hills into Tilden Park, then down Wildcat Cayon, around the San Pablo Reservoir, connected to the Happy Valley Road climb before looping back to Berkeley via Wildcat and Tilden Park again. A bit cool and overcast to start before eventually turning into a pleasant, sunny afternoon.

Crews were out working on the roads today. Some recently paved patches caused me to stop and wipe off the sticky new tarmac. This section of Wildcat Canyon Rd. already got the treatment.

Good catch. That's Briones Reservoir in the photo, not San Pablo Reservoir. Although, you do get a view of San Pablo Reservoir from Inspiration Point, too.

I finally bit the bullet and drilled the seatstay bridge on my amateur built track frame so that I could run front and rear brakes.

This iteration of this bike is a total parts bin fixed gear road bike build with a bit of a Francophile flavor. The original fork will not accept a front brake so I have one from a 1985 Schwinn Tempo installed. Ratio is 44x16 on 700x25c tires.

Pellisier track hubs, Sun XCD 50.4 cranks, Velo Orange 44t ring, Velo Orange stem.

Working my way north to Cino. I rode yesterday in Central Oregon, just a few miles north of Riley.
In the entire 32 mile loop I didn't see another vehicle; plenty of evidence of their passing in the washboard roads though!

....yes indeed, its my colourful Simoncini.....I'm usually cycling around London taking pics with my camera phone of various artworks and any other interesting things, but today the roles were reversed....


There's not many backgrounds the bike blends in with, but this is one.

We're due a mini heatwave this week in the UK, nothing like as hot as some of you endure, but temps above 30c are pretty rare for us, so its time to dig out the sun screen or we're going to get scorched.....

....or seek out some shade.....

I love old Italian bikes, and I love old Italian cars too, so I stopped and stared......

....at this beautiful condition Lancia Fulvia Coupe from 1965, a rare sight in London. Classic 60's Euro chic.



And just before I got home, on a busy junction outside Southwark station I've passed many times, I spotted something I've never noticed before, obviously I've been too preoccupied with the traffic. This lamp post with a dog licking from a bowl.

I took the PF10 out for bit this morning, ended up with 29 miles. They were good miles.

Spent a good part of the day trimming our hedge, but got away for a quick 30 miler up to the botanical garden.

i got new shoes! The old pair was over 15 years old and were falling apart. Love these - stiff, comfy, and good ventilation.



I also put on a new stem. I was feeling a little scrunched with the 130, so I popped on an old Tioga “T-Bone” 140. Much better and rigid.



Overall, a nice afternoon for a ride. Temps in the low 70s and a lake breeze at my back all the way home.

As always, stunning pics from all over. Here in Virginia we’ve had several inches more rain than we needed over the past 36 hours, but the cooler temps are most welcome. Still misty out and roads are wet so I went PNW and took the fendered Heron. A little homage to Tour de France here.

My sweetie and I took the tandem out today, 29 miles, almost exactly what I did yesterday even though it was a different route. As we were zipping along on some back road in Concord we heard a voice behind us say "Could that be Jim and Sharon? Haven't seen you in a long time!" It turned out to be Mike @Ghazmh, someone we'd ridden with a few time some years before. A sweep through the BF files showed it be April, 2017. We spoke for a few minutes and he said "Maybe I"ll see you at Fern's. I'm heading there for some coffee." Then he took off and left us in the proverbial dust. We continued on to rt225, took a left into Carlisle and stopped at Fern's Sure enough he was there having some coffee. We stopped and had a real nice visit. Sharon snapped this pic. That's Mike eating the delicious-looking cinnamon bun. I'm eating the (ahem) health-inducing banana. (I wouldn't have minded one of those buns tho'.)

I'm always up with riding with anyone that makes it to northern Utah. I do have to admit it's getting harder and harder each year to get good pictures up here. Way too much growth going on.

Crooked politicians are allowing developers rezone after rezone that is ruining the area. The guy making this mess had to resign from the local planning commission that approves the rezones. This development is still waiting official approval but with millions already spent tearing up the mountainside you know it's already been "approved". We have been under water restrictions for years now but the crooks in power keep approving all the new development despite a lack of water to go around.

Did I mention I love this bike? That saddle bag has a spare tubular, my cellphone, a medium size bottle of sealent CO2 inflator and 3 cartridges, money, ID, valve stem tool and various other tools. I can even expand it more if I need to carry other stuff. Pretty convenient for use on the tubular shod bikes. Maybe overkill as I've yet to flatten a tubular on the road.

Hard to beat low 70s and mostly cloudy after weeks of mid 90s.

Went to try out a hillier route on the fixed gear. Fun in a weird way going up, going down takes a lot of concentration when you’re geared this low - about 71” if I recall.

I’m serious! You should consider putting together a series of 3-4 nice day rides and invite people to come out and ride. Scozim did it, went well, others have too.
I know I’d come, and prolly five or six others as well. Just need some advance notice to plan.

abshipp I’ve always heard nice things about Greenville but have yet to visit. I knew Furman was in SC but don’t know it was in Greenville. I like the idea of the bike counter. Here’s one I saw recently in Westwood. There’s a digital counter at the top that don’t come through in the pic. It was lower than I expected (something like 25 at around noon) and I’m guessing it somehow doesn’t count scooters which are all over the place there.

Rode all last week in the Outer Banks and was really tired of being so drippy and sweaty, so went out in search of shade and coolth.
Spent an hour or so in the morning wiping down, lubing and fettling the Voyageur since we had driven home through six hours of torrential downpour. After all that, figured it would be a good idea to take it out on the ride.

Figured with the recent rain (and avoiding direct sun) that there would be copious amounts of mud.
I was not disappointed.

After yesterday’s ride the skies skies cleared and had brilliant blue skies and sunshine with a short reprieve from the humidity. Went up to the Blue Ridge Parkway for 40 ish miles. I came across a cross country rider. A gent from Darbyshire (Derbyshire?) UK. He started in San Francisco and looked to be in fine fettle. Apologies for non C/V but I was expecting a hard day of riding and needed every edge I could get. It is an Erik Zabel tribute paint scheme and his pro career started 30+ years ago, so there is that.
