Lazy Sunday morning ride with a grocery stop...

I got to see a couple of cattle movements while on the trail. I should've put the long lens on for this (since I did haul it with me the whole time) but it was windy and dusty and I was feeling lazy. I also didn't know it would take them another 20 minutes after they'd got them this close to the gate

I rarely run in to dogs with bad intentions, but just a squirt with my water bottle has made them think twice and turn back.

I had 4 dog run-ins on or near the PTCT. Only one pack was not deterred by bottle squirts, drained the bottle before they dropped off.

I've only had 2 encounters with dogs with obvious good intentions

One reservation dog came up and just jogged along side me for several miles, which was pretty awesome. Then once in Vancouver I had a dog follow me home, which was a pain in the ass. At first I kept stopping every block trying to tell him to go home, but he just wouldn't. Then I figured I'd drop him on this downhill, which I did, he must've been 400' back at one point, but then the downhill ended, the next uphill began and his was right with me once again. Had to put a classified ad and a craigslist post up the next morning, and took him to the pound a couple days later. Hope the owners found him, or someone adopted him.

Yesterday was the group's annual ride in the Wisconsin hills north of Lake Pepin (of Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House in the Big Woods fame).

It was a great day, despite some quirks and challenges. One of the guys lost his front wheel, while picking up others on the way there, but we were fortunate enough to find a wheel to borrow. Mid-ride, another guy had his pedal break on him, sliding off the spindle while stuck to his shoe, so he and a few others limped home along an easier route. And then a couple of the guys and I ended up wasting time jawing with some Karen whose hubby buzzed us in their SUV.

Still a great day and a great ride, though. It was really pretty, the weather couldn't have been too much better (we did have a few sprinkles), I paced the hills well and felt strong the whole day, and crossed through all four streams without issue.

Oh, and unless someone puts up some elevation today, it looks like this flatlander will be taking the coveted (well, only by datlas ) elevation crown for the week.

Oh, and I missed my flight home last night. Gate agent closed the flight right in front of me. That was painful. Flew the fastest I have yet from Dallas, sweet talked the controllers to get short cuts, all for nothing. Spent the night in the airport.


Looks like rain the 4 days that I am home. Grumble grumble grumble.

Rode it west to east in 2000. Spent the night before at a primitive campsite a few miles up from Moran. First time ever camping in a place undeveloped. A couple of tables and a bear locker. There were moose tracks in the dried earth and ripped open tree stumps suggesting bear activity, but wildflowers and a beautiful view of the Tetons. Every pine cone falling and branch creaking in the middle of the night scared me. Best it out of there at first light. There was a dude ranch a couple of miles up the hill with a restaurant that was open to the public. Had a nice breakfast then went over the pass and down to DuBois.
It’s over 9,600’. I stopped at the top near a lake. I could feel the altitude effect. Highest I had been on a bike to that time.

Wearing a finisher's medal out in public the entire day of the marathon - cool or corny?

Simply not done. Like wearing this year’s regatta hat to the tent party, only worse because a finisher’s medal is intrinsically naff.

Oh, but someone's doing it... and they're seated at the table next to me.

I should also point out that said individual proudly proclaimed that a) the first place finisher got the same medal and b) the first place finisher had a time of 1hr and 40-some-odd minutes.

1:40 is a hell of a marathon time. If your dinner companion ran under 2:20, they can wear their medal.

Yeah, it's more than 20 minutes faster than has even been run, IIRC. IOW, that sure as hell didn't happen today.

I think I overheard something in the 6 hour range.

If I had ever finished a marathon back in my running days which I didn't, I would have valued the medal. But would not have worn it in public at the race or after.

Saw a 20-something runner show up at a 10K race with the track medals he won in high school.
