Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It was the second time I saw someone get pinched for shoplifting. The first time was earlier this year. The cops where there. Guys had a bunch of stuff.
Does sound like they had her dead to rights. I meant about her life and state of mind.

I went out of my way to avoid breaking up with a girl via text because I figured I should tell her face to face but she figured it out anyway via text message so that's how we broke up.

It wasn't a "leaving you for another woman" thing though. I just didn't want to be with her anymore.

I became aware of her at this year's Dirty Kanza. On Friday afternoon all the DKXL 350-mile riders take off and I saw this woman on a single speed with flat pedals and jorts and I thought "damn, that's pretty bad ass."

As it turns out she (a) rode her bike from Iowa to Emporia to the start; (b) we had some pretty terrific tornadoes and thunderstorms in the region that week and she had to hide out a couple times; and (c) during the actual DKXL one of her flat pedals broke, but she happened cross paths with someone who had a spare Eggbeater so she zip tied the platform to the Eggbeater and finished the last 60 miles or so that way.

Apparently she had similar pedal issues at the Tour Divide and finished on a cobbled-together repair.

So yeah, Redwing boots... and a wheelbarrow full of bad-assery.

I think the preferred line is, "It's not you. It's me."

Two different years I saw participants in the race while I was touring in Montana. They were way behind. Still, I cannot imagine doing what they do, especially with the relatively small amount of gear they have with them. One year several riders pulled into Wise River for food. I had just come north on the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway. After lunch they had to climb it heading south. 26 miles up hill to one degree or another. At least that part of the route is paved.

Holy crap. I've never seen such a thing. I ride in some cold stuff, but I'm not sure I could go with something like that. Then again, comfort tops everything in single digits.

Been trying to upload a photo of the apple butter I scored during lunch, but the program isn't working from either my work computer or my phone. And no, it's not a large image.

For example, the club liked to brew up a big urn of coffee for riders. That required the use of an electrical outlet on the side of a city building. That, in turn, required the club to pay to have a city electrician on duty. WTH?

They're primarily for the fat bike types, where you'll spend some time trudging through the snow, I think.
