Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I decided that this morning would be a bike crick hunting session. After 90 minutes or so, I've successfully eliminated zero of the targeted noises.

I feel your pain. My Storck has something clicking. I've narrowed it down - it's not the front wheel....maybe. What helps a lot is that it's intermittent and doesn't seem to follow any kind of pattern. Saying a lot of bad words hasn't changed anything, so I guess I need to try something else.

I've not seen this. To the contrary, I've been surprised how little is expected of the patient. The witch doctors view you only as a lab rat, upon which they administer their various concoctions in experimental fashion.

I guess you'll have to make do the earbud solution.

At least I've semi-isolated the primary bothersome noise, which seems to be crank/BB-based; one-legged pedaling shows that it's only present on the down-stroke of the NDS....

Nope. I haven't really worn my earbuds much, lately. Without the ear coverings of winter garb, they seem to be prone to wind noise. I might seek out another set, but no reviewers seem to cover how they fare at 20mph.

Sadly, I think your path at the moment is a lot like the South Park 'Underpants Gnomes' path to profitability:

You know where you are now. You know the goal. You don't know the path.

My experience with such things tells me there's a 47.32% chance it's not where you think it is, especially when you feel really certain that you have isolated it.

Is "Tennessee Man" jealous of the attention that "Florida Man" has been getting the last couple years? There's a lot of ground to make up, but I think that y'all can do it if you give it the ol' college try.

When I was riding the Lotus with toeclip pedals and tennis shoes, I was hearing a rhythmic 'tick, tick, tick' as I pedaled, with the same rate as the pedal stroke. After worrying about bottom bracket, cranks, pedals, etc. I finally determined that it was the aglet on one end of the shoelace on my right shoe, lifting off the shoe on the downstroke and hitting it again on the upstroke. Stuffed the end of the lace into the other laces and it stopped.

But, yeah. The Canyon's got a noisy bottom bracket, which used to drive me nuts but now I don't notice it.

Had that same thing once. Only made the noise on NDS while one-legged pedaling. Ended up being the crank bolt.

Loosened up the compression bolts on the crank arm, tightened the crank bolt, and retightened the arm. Done.

Yeah, I know, which is why I said "semi-isolated." It's in the orbit of the NDS crank arm, but it could still take some work to straighten out. I'll poke around a little more in the afternoon, if I have time. If I had the BB tool for my BB, I'd pull it out, too, but I don't, so.... that's prolly where it is.

Yeah, that was one of my first thoughts, and I've done that twice over the course of things. No dice.

Since you don't have that tool, you can almost guarantee that's where it is. The Bike Gods are amused by such things.

Scout has a crick. I know what it is, but I haven't remedied it yet.

Another lovely ride. On a gorgeous day! I don't know if I'm odd man out here, but I am usually meh about going for a ride. Plenty of other things to keep me busy. But it's on the schedule. As soon as I throw my leg over the saddle, the world changes. Time ceases to exist. Etc.

I’m mostly thinking about my dad’s old truck mechanic tools. Of course I never used them and it’s past time to get rid of them.
