Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So…I’m at mile 66, about 1 mile from my local, when I see a woman up ahead literally carrying her bike. I seriously considered not stopping, but the concept of bad karma convinced me otherwise. Turns out she had broken off her RD hanger and her chain was wedge between the cassette and spokes, so the rear wheel wouldn’t turn. I freed it and showed her how to skateboard home. She didn’t live all that far away.

I expect to be rewarded for my service. What an eventful tour. When I pulled up to my local my odometer, which was at 0 when I started my ride from my house to the train station, read exactly 650 miles.

If it fell in her garage as she was unloading it, it would (less deductible). Prolly not worth it.

There were only two* pairs of shoes in the shop that fit me - the white CX176 and some black Giro Cadets. I was planning on buying the Cadets today, but we were fairly busy and I just didn't have the time.

Of course, someone came in looking for shoes, and my colleague ended up selling the exact pair I was planning on picking up

FOMO kicked in super hard and I grabbed these.

I've needed new road shoes for a while. I've still been riding my first pair and they have very recently got way too short - I tend to pedal toe-down and my toes have been hitting the front of the toe box in a quite painful way. I never had that problem before, but there's a definite correlation between my shoes fitting while working a desk job and all of a sudden not fitting when having a job where I'm on my feet all day.

*The only other pair that fit were like $450 retail. Even with some shop discount love I'm not about to drop that kind of cash on bike shoes

I'm not sure what constitutes awesomeness in a dog, but it's a low bar.

I'll write to her and suggest that, thanks. She was taking it to a shop after the ride today to get their opinion on what to do.

Took my Trek Alpha cx bike out again today. Another 20some miles. It's not horrible. I swapped the seat to a Roman Evo today from a toupe yesterday, much better. I get a bit of toe overlap in tight turns. Because it's a 56cm other than that it fits me pretty well. Was strange feeling to be putting mntn shoes on. Gives me something to ride gravel I guess.
It's going to be a long winter....
