Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My college roommates used to get ****ed up while playing that album to death back in the day. Not me, of course. I was appalled.

With a big ass gun in the bed.

New generation Tundra was released and doesn't get it done. No V8. Land Cruiser is gone. All the Toyota trucks will have a hybrid option by 2023.

I COULD reuse the spokes, because the ERD of the Aerohead and A23 are only 1 mm different. I was able to find the dimensions for the 7400/7403 F/R hubs, and there are a number of spoke calculators out there.

I figure I can probably build the wheel, as in lacing it, without too much problem - plenty of videos! But the tensioning/detensioning/retensioning thing, I'm concerned about. I had a pair of wheels built once that needed retensioning/retruing after <100 miles. OTOH, the wheels I had built for the Battaglin went 5000 miles and went through several potholes before they needed any truing at all -THAT is the level of quality I'd call a Gold Standard.

What about budget Fulcrums? I think that I just got an email from PBK about wheels on sale.

Yes. The rest is just fluff, I use a home made nipple driver (reported) and a home made dishing gage, for rears, and some use a tensiometer, but none of them are necessary.

How much are the A23s compared to the H+ Hydras these days? A23s are fine, but I thought that the H+ (Archetype, back then) were well worth the extra 10 bucks each.

Of course, the H Y D R A wrapping around the rim may not be the aesthetic of choice for the build.

I have been building my own wheels for the past ten years, vintage only. I'm not one to go out of my way doing extra this and that, as the scuttlebut says must be done. All of my wheels run true, with only the occasional touch-up. It's not rocket science. I use used spokes almost exclusively, since the cost of new ones has sky-rocketed. I do try to use new nipples, but that is not always done either.

Excel sent out an email on the new Cervelo R5. Looks nice. Same geometry as the previous R5, but it'll take up to 34mm tires and it's got the internally routed cockpit.

The $5k price for the frameset is a bit "ouch" though.

Yeah, I was looking at the Fulcrum Racing 4's, which would cost about as much as this wheelbuilding adventure. I've got Racing 5s on the Bianchi at the moment. Eerily silent freehub, which is quite a switch from the "swarm of Murder Hornets" that was the OLD Racing 5s that they replaced.
