lol was thinking about this 2 rides ago. Everyone smiled or waved and then I hit one town, riding through, not one wave or smile. Was weird.

I find most people will acknowledge you with a wave, a nod or some gesture, walkers, riders and runners.
I always acknowledge back unless they're doing something stupid or unsafe. Such as no helmet or riding against traffic. I figure they're DEAD to me and might be actually dead if they continue.

Proper protocol after turning yourself inside out to close the gap and pass them is to look as smooth, calm, and nonchalant as possible and give them a simple "Hey." while your legs and insides are still dying.

The response I get from fellow riders does depend on the kit I'm wearing. When I wear one of a couple of club kits that are widely recognizable in the local metro area, I get more people waving and saying hi. Generic kit, less-so. That seems natural and OK. They don't know me, but lots of people in town know of these clubs or know people who ride with them.

Personally, I do not get the waving at total strangers because they are on bicycles. I do not know them, and they do not know me. Quite likely, since I live in a beach resort area, about 98% of them and myself will never cross paths again. I don't think I am being rude, or snobbish. I also do not think I am in a special club because I am a cyclist. Now, if I am stopped somewhere, for whatever reason, and there are cyclists there, I will say hi, how are you, and maybe talk a bit. Anyway, I prefer to do my riding early morning before there are many other people out and about.

Yeah really hurts my hands if I lift them a little bit to wave back. Also really breaks my focus and concentration if I acknowledge someone else who waved to me. My day is absolutely ruined.

I glare back to anyone who waves, but then again, I'm of German heritage so that's considered a friendly gesture (i.e. - more friendly than invading you).
