new bike tease post #2

Ok this is not much of a tease, but consider it a tease as it is not a) in my hands yet and b) built

but my almost here Dave Kirk JK special

I would say if you ever have thought about a custom go for it.

the expericence with Dave and Joe Bell has been amazing

Fantastic, I know exactly how you feel having done the Strawberry frame, you really have to go all in to be on board, nobody but you can or will fully appreciate the time, energy, effort and $$$$$$ that goes into this often being far beyond many folks tolerance for such things.

Nor the satisfaction and reward especially considering or despite all that which is huge with the proper mindset.

POPS!

custom is fun.
I've done steel (single + tandem) and cf.
I want a DeSalvo custom Ti. Should ride to Ashland to get fitted. Craig & Jon used different techniques.

Thats really beautiful. What tubing did you go with?

I once went to see a Holland bike listed on the local CL. Turned out to have a Joe Bell paint job, which was fantastic! Unfortunately the bike had some serious damage and I had to pass, but that paint really stood out. I can see yours is even more spectacular.

not in order, my approach was I am going to well known custom builder for his knowledge so I provided my input (his question form has some fun question) I was a bit surprised that he suggested the JK special, his raciest bike

bike will handle 32, 28 with fenders tires, anything more would impact the ride (note as I understand it if you go Fillet brazed vs lugged you can get to 35mm tires easily

tubing: The JK Special bikes are built with a proprietary mix of tubes (chainstays, seat stays, and fork blades) made to my specifications by Reynolds of England as well as Reynolds 953 and 853 Pro

build Ultegra R8000 11 speed mechanical, Velo-Orange Gran Cru long reach brakes, Nitto stem, seatpost, and Noodle bar, Berthoud saddle, King Cage stainless, white tape and cables,
wheelset 1: White T11 hubs 32 h, H+son Archetype rims with Rene Herse 32mm stampede pass (tubes) Wheelset 2: Hope RS4 hubs, Amrbosio Nemesis 32 h rims, FMB 29 mm Cobblestone tubular and a set of Rene Herse fenders

geometry and clearance, didn't really analyze that much...again going with builder recoomendations, but he did things like longer head tube and shorter stem to help with stability at speed, but here is design

Wow, with those colors you'll be leading the Mardi Gras parade next year?

Those housing stops on the head tube really catch the eye. Cool!

Super cool. Did you tell the builder, "No load likely in the front and a trunk bag or small panniers in the rear."? Were are you planning to store it when you get to work?

that is basically what I told the builder. panniers for commute to work and credit card touring. I an always put a bag up front if needed

I am using a Tubus rack, send it to dave and he made sure it was fit well

got some super bright ortlieb bags

at work we have bike lockers and this on very likely will get put in my cube (until facilities yells at me)

Dave Kirk building, Joe Bell painting - I guess that's okay.

Okay, that's very, very cool. A friend bought a custom from Dave Kirk. He, too, said that dealing with him and Joe Bell was great. I'm looking forward to seeing pics of the finished bike, but especially looking forward to pics of the smile on your face holding and riding it.
