If UPS is still in possession of the bikes, sure. My concern is the bikes have been delivered to an incorrect address. In fact, I believe it's the most likely scenario.

You will either get your bikes or the insured value. All these people asking for law suits or police reports are clueless. I ship stuff everyday with UPS and LTL freight. You will not get more than insured value no mater how much you insist or sue. Lesson learned. I'm the cheapest person around but anytime I ship something over $500 always insure.

Just received this:

"At this point we've exhausted all leads to locate this shipment unfortunately. Your best bet would be to file a police report for stolen property, make sure it includes a complete description of the bike, value, and description of the incident. Once that's received, we can have our claims team review for reimbursement. Let us know if you have any questions!"

So, as of now I'm out roughly $1,200. Any advice for potentially recovering the bikes on my own?

This may not be if any help, but if UPS told you to file a police report, is that enough of an indication the bikes were stolen?

Would that open up an avenue to your homeowner’s policy?

I have no idea.

Sorry... I'm not trying to be a pest. Here's a screen-shot of what I'm seeing on my computer. There's definitely something weird going on, because when I clicked on the "Quote" icon, the line I wanted to quote wasn't there! So I cut and pasted it, figuring it was just a computer glitch. At any rate, it looks like neither of us is losing our marbles.
I'm still sorry about your bikes!

I took this with my phone because my Mac doesn't do screenshots for some reason.

Ooh, very odd. It definitely is there when I read it, but it doesn’t show when quoted. Some kind of Jedi mind trick?

Thanks.

No. I've checked FB marketplace and craigslist in the city I shipped from.

would the stolen bike registry be worth a try?

Re the police report and the implication that it was indeed stolen. You said you're not a home owner, but do you have renter's insurance? Regardless, very sorry about the whole situation. I appreciate that you've taken us through this ordeal because we can all learn from it.

No renters insurance. I'm unsure if I've mentioned this, but I spoke to a woman who said UPS lost her passport and they didn't find it until a year later. That seems plausible. However, with items as large as two bike boxes, it seems highly unlikely they could be sitting in a warehouse unaccounted for. My belief is that they were delivered to the wrong address, and whoever received them simply kept the unexpected windfall.

The one glimmer of hope is that whatever the bikes were scanned as, I know the correct labels were on the box. Since there were two I ensured the correct label went on each. Would UPS deliver a bike box to the wrong address with the correct address on the label? If not, that leaves two scenarios:

1: A UPS worker stole the boxes

2: UPS is still in possession of the bikes

I still want to speak to UPS, but I've been unable to get through to a live person off their automated system after my initial conversation.

UPS drivers can definitely make mistakes in delivery. They can and do read street addresses wrong from time to time. I know from personal experience that it's the same for USPS, FedEX, Amazon, and I expect for every other delivery service.

How glaring are there errors? Would they potentially deliver to the wrong city or state?

depends on your local areas track record.
When a packaging is shipping in or out in my area, F'dEx is the worst when it comes to address errors, lost, damaged, slipped schedule.
Amazon is next in line.
USPS might be equal to Amazon
UPS is best.
DHL has always been great, when they are used.

Surprisingly, Walmart delivery has been great... but that's only covers items they ship from there warehouse.

Amazon and FedEx have delivered items addressed to me to the wrong city (Cedar Rapids for 'zon, Houston for FedEx). UPS screwed up one delivery so royally that they cost me $3,000 in lost income; I will never use UPS again if I have a reasonable choice. I live at #2324 on my street; some stuff is misdelivered, for example, to 2425 or 2320, and vice versa. IME, USPS has been the best.

DHL swapped two of our packages destined for Malaysia and Germany. It only took 2 days to get them to the wrong destinations, but 5 weeks to sort it out and get them to the correct destination.
