This winter I spent many hours on the Wahoo riding through Japan. Haven't been there since 1981 and remember it well. Thought of moving there shortly after that, however not a place someone moves to without a plan. The whole culture, even the "mods" in the big cities carry respect for others.

I’ll be going to the tip of Hokkaido, down to Kyushu and then Okinawa

I live in Japan and the Tip of Hokkaido to Kyushu I believe is a bad idea unless you have at least two years. I have seen vids on youtube of such journeys and they just ride and ride and miss everything that is worth seeing. My now youtube channel a is called waddo for those who want to see what is actually worth seeing.

I will not talk about the old ones (camera on helmet???!!!) but for all the newer 4k videos, I have a Sony FDR X3000 action cam. It is not waterproof but has the best mics of any action camera. I try to make sure there is ambient sound at all times in the final video. Previous to that I had the HD version of the same camera.

No, just a normal mount. I believe the camera has optical as well as digital stabilisation, so in addition to better sound who video is smoother than other action cams. For the last 2 years or so I am also very selective about the bike riding segments I use, so not just the most interesting bits of the route but also the least shaky. Finally I use more image stabilisation in Final Cut Pro, the editing software I use. There are other things I do that I won't mention because viewers need to believe what they are watching is real, whereas in reality it is all art.

Well my all Japan tour came to a temporary end ( will continue this month , June ) . Travel restrictions were in placed . Did 7 prefectures though. Yamaguchi, Shimane, Tottori, Hyogo, Kyoto, Fukui and Ishikawa.

What was your approx. touring speed on your most recent trips ?

Bike touring Kyushu by myself a couple years ago.... so memorable, in a good way. Japan is dense with things to stop and look at. And strange little roads winding through the mountains.

I rode my Brompton folding bike.
So many lovely rides. Maybe my favorite was Rd 8 from Taketa to Takachiho, and then the next day along the Gokase River out to the coast. Rd 8 was very hilly, but I had lowered the gear range on the Brompton prior to touring.
