Very nice weather today in the low 60's first day in the 60's in about 8 months so I got to take the back roads to Alma and the bike path back about 20 miles round trip. Took the Schwinn Mesa GSX still have a hard time believing how nice this older trash find MTB climbs and takes downhills.

It has been far too long since i last took a photo by the river!

After a week of hell trying to find a place to live I went on our Saturday AM shop ride.

No pics of the bike but there was one person in particular who quite appreciated my chrome SLT

I can get used to roads like this:

Got out early again but with overcast skies today. The valley continues to green up but with a bad winter of little snow it's going to be very bad around here if we don't get some serious rains.

First stop in the center of Huntsville

More of the town center

Snow above, desert below

One of two totem poles along my daily route

Old Barn

Front side of the same barn

Snowbasin Mt

Old Monastery

Historic barn in Eden.

Another shot of my baby grabbed late in the ride.

LOL, I thought the same thing. But no one was out at the time and I don't trespass. But I wave to them all the time so if I catch them out while on this bike next time I'm going to ask.

Cool and windy here this morning and even a little sprinkle that I waited out before hitting the road. I wasn’t on a C&V but I did stick some 650b x 48mm wheels on my Ti bike and headed up the biggest climb around here, Blue Hill Observatory in Milton, MA. My elevation profile:

See that big peak in the middle? That amounts to 1700 ft of climbing over 33 miles. Of course, there were a couple of roadies doing hill repeats (they were headed up for at least their third climb when I was heading down), plus there was some guy on a fat-tire bike heading up for at least his second climb while I was heading down. That’s humbling.

And here’s the bike shod with fatties:

I switched back to 700 x 38mm after the ride as I really didn’t feel much of a difference. Probably would on a gravel ride, but I was mostly on asphalt.

I did not get far, but i did get to see some pretty sights. I rode in the afternoon mostly, and it was still pretty cool out.

I love this lil spot, it looks like its up north but it's 5km from my house

I fitted the carrier for my saddlebag (thanks mom!) and headed out for a ride to shake out the new parts. With a little added weight, this bike feels extra sure-footed and comfortable. I'm gonna fit the front low-rider rack for my set of panniers in advance of a short tour of the eastern part of Ontario in early June.

Still frosting at sunrise in May!

Unfortunately the unseasonal frost has killed a lot of blossoms but the clear sky makes for a pretty sunrise.

A couple of friends took the train down this way yesterday. I met them at State Street Station for a meandering ride around New Haven to home, then eventually dinner at Le Petit Café. Here’s the view overlooking the city from East Rock Park:

ETA: we enjoyed a mid-ride taco stop at the Long Wharf food trucks. Muy bueno.

Where it all began to go wrong

Rode into town and stopped along The Backs. King's College in the background with its famous chapel to the left.1927 Sunbeam three speed is the bike. It was here ,and other Oxbridge colleges , that those who destroyed the British bike industry that built Sunbeams and so many other world renowned marques were educated.
Tally ho.
If you look carefully you can make out two punters with their poles going downstream on the Cam from right to left . One has a dark shirt appearing slightly to the right of the Chapel door and the other further to the left in a white shirt. Both are obviously Japanese. They are standing on the rear deck of their punts. Their fellow punters, who are are in the punt but seated and thus obscured by the riverbank , are providing moral support.

Much warmer here today, a beautiful morning for a spin out to a favorite farm stand in Millis, MA. Sadly I didn’t take a pic of the awesome breakfast sandwich I had. Too busy scarfing it down. I was on the ‘85 Raleigh Gran Course.

Took my new to me, and looks like new, VO Randonneur on a shakedown cruise on the gravel roads around Free Union, Va today. This time of year is when they reload the gravel after the winter, so lots of challenging surface and maybe a little ambitious for a first time ride but the bike handled it well. Had some frustration with two over shifts of the big ring and the the little pin that’s supposed to keep the chain from wrapping around the crank instead trapped the chain down below it. So, to avoid that the remainder of the ride, I adjusted the FD so that it took almost superhuman effort and will to get it onto the big ring. Other than that great day out on the dirt roads and only spent about 5 miles on pavement.

Clark Rd

Chapel Springs Rd

This little nipper chased me about 1/4 mile up a pretty steep climb, Fox Mountain

Covered Bridge, Pont Rouge, but it’s a private driveway.

Warm day, low 80s! Did 54 miles up north. Quite windy, couldn't hold the camera still.

Somehow, this caught my eye as I was zipping along.

Luckily, I had a special "fungus containment apparatus" attached to the bike.

Post-ride, I conducted an experiment involving the careful application of heat and Land O Lakes butter.

Got out for 30 miles with my buddy Jacob from noon to around 2, then did lunch. After he packed up and headed home, I headed out for another 25 or so. Perfect day to be out on the bike!

Some pics from the Burke Gilman Trail portion of the ride down to UW:

A local shop has a deal with the City of Bothell to display/sell cycling clothing at a portable site on the trail near Bothell Landing Park.
This is one of the coolest prints on one of the display jerseys:

Pasadena Velo Retro, 27 miles. No scenic shots, but good times seeing riders I haven't see since Feb. 2020. I enjoyed the vintage ride on the old Legnano Roma, had since new.

The wind came from south-west and so that's my direction at first. A lot of farmers busy and on the road.

And always somewhere there's Maria.

Here's a monument for nine soldiers died in World War II, feb 1945. Their plane crashed in this neighbourhood.

A small boat in an old gravel pit.

Industrial ruin in the countryside. With 30 year old Alan Carbonio Mtb.

And a last view before goin' home.

A forty mile section of State Route 20 in Washington is closed every year from late Fall thru mid Spring, due to avalanche danger. This part of the highway passes through the North Cascade Mountains, connecting eastern and western Washington. DOT announced the other day that it will be opening to car traffic sometime this week. So Sunday would be a great day to ride the North Cascades without any motor vehicles on the rad.

Yesterday my son and I loaded up our bikes and drove a couple of hours to where DOT has the road gated off on the west side. We rode up to the first of the two passes, and back to the car. The weather was perfect for riding in the mountains, sunny and cool(much cooler at the top).

It would be the biggest solo(not counting some tandem adventures the past)ride to date.

52 miles
Just shy of 5,000 feet of elevation gain

I am so proud of my thirteen year old boy. He is a great riding companion, and didn't miss a beat throughout the day(well, maybe around mile 45 he was showing signs of fatigue).

apologies in advance for most of the photos having my kid in them(proud pop moments).

A shout out to northbend here, as he sat in this same spot with me a few years back.

This is at Rainy Pass, looking towards the west, and getting ready for about 18 miles of downhill.

Our bikes at the Ross Lake vista point, close to where we started.

Thomas taking out some back markers...
