Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

We were riding in the mountains and there were pit toilets at a trailhead parking area. One of the ladies went to use the facility and forgot she had her Blackberry in the waistband of her shorts, so it went in. She had all her client info on it so she really wanted to get it back. There was a group of boy scouts there and they helped by removing the toilet pedestal, (they just lift off), and helped her retrieve the phone.

I am guessing that she will be too "practical" to accept the suggestion, but will give it a shot. It almost makes sense to consider getting it soon, since Heidi is home for the summer she and mrs datlas will be fighting over use of the Fit. Bummer that it's a seller's market but that's life.

I should not be surprised, but the vast majority of Miata listings I see are stick-shift. That would be fine if the car would be exclusively mine. Mrs datlas has said NFW to a stick. Sad.

Going to see the Phillies vs. Padres tonight in a box, courtesy of a law firm we use. No Bryce Harper though.

It's designed to be a lightweight car, and it comes in at something like 2300 pounds. Manuals are lighter than autos in most cases so it helps with the weight. Plus, you have the old school belief that sports cars should only come in manual.

Here's a list of about 15 with automatics: MAZDA MX-5 Miata for Sale Right Now in West Chester, PA - Autotrader

I wanted to teach Mrs John to drive the Blazer when I had it but she wouldn't even consider it. Something about a previous boyfriend yelling at her while trying to teach her to drive stick.

In about 1974 I had a VW bug and I tried to teach my girlfriend to drive it. She let the clutch out and panicked, just froze while accelerating toward my truck. I yanked the parking brake hard enough to stall it and stop. No more lessons for her.

Sometimes a couple girls would come with us to the desert when we went motorcycling. I had an old short travel bike and beginners would ride it. I put this girl on it, I was sure she had ridden it before, and she dumped the clutch and panicked. She bounced off the rear bumper of my friend's pickup which tore one of the rear shocks off the bike. Somehow she remained upright until she crashed into a large bush. She had some bruises but was ok.

When we were dating, I had a 1985 Mustang GT with a 5 speed. It was a fun car to drive, but had a VERY grabby clutch. I tried to get her to learn, and it did not go well.

I have since tried to explain to her that the Saturn has a very gentle clutch, and it's worth trying again, but she is adamantly refusing.

And the Dude abides.

Tribalism:
We have been under a mask mandate for a little over two years. Outside, inside, in the car. If you're away from home, you're masked. There were some outliers, the young toughs and the old salts come to mind. But it was a visible population. Earlier this week the outdoor and open space part of that mandate was lifted. And the peer pressure foot came down hard. NO ONE is unmasked anymore. The toughs and the salts are going out of their way to flaunt their masks. I had two mask free rides through town and then had to put it back on. Otherwise, when things change again there will be an obvious scapegoat.
I'm going into the city in a few minutes and expect to see a radical difference there.

I tried to convince her the Blazer was as easy to drive as any stick shift ever, but no way.

When I was working I was surprised at how many young people could not drive a stick. When the regular porters were out or at lunch they would have the office women bring up customer's cars. If there was a stick shift to be moved they would come to the shop and ask one of us to do it.

When my wife and I were dating, I had a '91 RX7 convertible with a manual. She could drive a manual, and one day asked if she could drive the car. So, I pulled into a parking lot, parked and changed seats with her. She drove the car okay until she pulled out of the parking lot, turned too sharply, and ran the car over the curb. Fortunately, it didn't get stuck, but the scraping of the car across the curb with the top down was excruciating.

Married her anyway.

Got humiliated on this a.m.'s group thrash as usual, but I did hang on the hills and HR went > 180 a couple of time so I was doing my best. I just poop out on the long rolling sections. Oldest guy on the ride too.
