Ease of Parts Removal/Install
Was wondering how difficult some part swaps are compared to what I’ve done previously...
I’ve removed and installed cassettes numerous times (I have a chain whip and cassette tool) and that has always been ‘easy’. Also removed a Shimano crankset (GRX), easy as well.
Some part swaps I’ll be needing to do in the next 3-6 months:
- chain (I have the Shimano quick link plier tool and a chain breaker, assume this would be easy, including figuring out how many links needed)
- Bottom bracket (threaded 68mm, replacing Tiara with Ultegra)
- Rear derailleur (Shimano 105)
I’ve seen videos and would certainly watch them again before attempting...
Usually I’ve had a few things needed so have just brought to the lbs, and I may still do so with the above items, but would like to gain some confidence doing myself.

Nothing should be too bad as long as threads aren't stuck.
I like to check the derailleur adjustment whenever messing with the drive train.
You may need specific tools for each job. And there are quite a few different types of bottom brackets.

Keep in mind that some components (left side pedals, freewheels and right side bottom brackets) utilize “left hand” threads where “righty-tighty, lefty-loosey” doesn’t apply
