Vintage SCHAUFF bike identification

Hi!
Yesterday I found this frame - imo this is Schauff, but I can not find the same model
It looks like a single - tandem version. I am not sure, but painting is not original ( under the paint you can see a silver, (chrome?) fork.
stem : SR MTS 100 slingshot
brakes: weinmann
crank: shimano 200GS

The Shimano 200GS crankset would place early 1990s but I don't think it's original. Based on the serial number, Weinmann cantilever brakes and Altus rear derailleur, I'd place it 1985.

the high position of the BB makes me think it started life as a MTB. couldn't find a similar frame on early Schauff MTBs 1980-1985. that style of stem was popular on Kettler MTBs as well.
Schauff is a big manufacturer (they are still around and maybe willing to help)

Definitely a mid-1980s mountain bike. That's all I have, since I am unfamiliar with the marque. (This website is a lifelong learning platform! )

Further research: The history of Schauff, from their website, parallels that of Capo (founded 1932 vs. 1930, based in Germany vs. Austria, named after bicycle enthusiast/racer founder (Shauff, Hans vs. Cap, Otto), family owned business).

lots of good information posted. All I have to add is that it looks like it was a pretty basic bike. If you don’t already have wheels I’d recommend looking a better quality complete bike.

The old school stem/bar combo is neat. The Mafac style cantilevers might also be worth hanging onto.

I asked the knowledge of German Rennrad-News.de, Schauff is confirmed (the s shape brake plate)

Agree with bianchigirl, a low level bike and restoration is a minus game if you don't have the parts already

There were some mighty sexy Schauffs over the years. Schauff was big in racing and sponsored countless teams over the decades. WC Rudi Altig had close ties.

This is the album of Jan S(chauff), grandson of the founder: https://fotos.rennrad-news.de/u/33327

Interesting frame design to make it extra stiff & strong but thats lots of extra steel and thus weight.
Does not look like it will allow wide mountain or gravel type tires and not worth adding suspension so I pass on putting $ into this project.

Thank you guys for a solid portion of a knowledge!! I have a lot of old parts that I can use here - for free.
Therefore I am thinking of trying to refurbish this bike at a low cost. I tried to put on 28" wheels and they come in without a problem.

In fact this bike is not terrible heavy. I'll take off the horns and lose 2kg of it :-D

yeah that kind of strut was used on tandems and early MTBs, it adds almost nothing to stiffness but adds off-road credibility
