First attempt at restoration and it is a Peugeot

I picked up my father in law's old Peugeot this week and would like to restore it. All I know about it is that it was purchased used in the early 80's and has not been ridden in at least 20 years. First I want to identify the model and approximate year and then move into fixing it. I have never done this before but I do some of my own wrenching on my road bike. Any help is much appreciated.

Early 1970's AO-8, no chrome on fork. Hang onto the valuable saddle. Nice to have a smaller chainring than the normal 52/48 setup.

Decals are appropriate to a 77 A08.
Saddle, short-cage Prestige and DT shifters would be earlier - so possibly a transitional ~76 A08.

Hokie - Check out Randy's "My Ten Speeds" site - It has a lot of useful info for you in getting your rehab underway. Er, um - I mean the BIKE's rehab!

We have long winters with nothing better to do!

I think the mafac suicide levers are fairly unique as well - haven't seen them all original like that before with the hood rubbers, suicide levers and plastic lever cover.

OP I must admit I am not a Peugeot fan, I am however a huge fan of people fixing up inherited bikes out of love so I really like this one. The Mafac brakes on your bike are some of the best from that era btw, you can put new kool stop pads on them and they'll stop extremely well. Do you care about it being stock/period correct or do you plan to do some "improvements"?

There's nothing unusual about those. Most buyers insisted on "safety" levers when I worked in a Peugeot shop. The half hoods and plastic lever covers are factory.

Didn't they switch to stem shifters in about 1975?

I would like to reuse as much as possible and only replace parts that won't work. Certainly the tires and bar tape need to be replaced. I also think the cables and housing need to be replaced but beyond that, it appears to be in good condition.

Welcome to the Peugeot madness. I'm in the middle of my first resto on a UO8 and then bought another on Friday. Parts cam be a little tricky but the experts here tell me they can be had with a little patience.

The stem and bars on these are a little dicey if you plan on riding it hard.

Google search "death stem", and make your own decisions on whether to use as is or replace.

Here are a couple of links to some good info on Peugeots that will help you learn more about your bike; serial numbers, decals, year by year featurs and some good catalog scans. I have two Peugeots in my collection, a white '69 UO-18 Mixte frame and a '71 green UO-8. Both are in need of restoration. Good luck with yours.

Every plastic Simplex FD I have come across is the last five years was cracked, usually somewhere in the clamp area. The RDs, while they have problems, seem to me more durable.

Please don't confuse ebay "asking" prices with "selling" prices. Many sellers never get their ask price. some are far from it. Value is determined once an item actually SELLS. Its easy enough to check SOLD prices.

You nailed that one. The FD clamp is cracked. So is it worth trying to find a Simplex replacement online or should I replace the FD with something else? Are there FD's out there that will work with down tube shifters? My goal here is to make this bike look awesome and to be able to ride it around the neighborhood or to the store or pool so no group or long rides. It is a little small for me anyway.

Be gentle on me as I am a rookie at restoration. Wrenching skills on my other bikes consists of replacing chains and cassettes, tires, adjusting saddle height, etc. I have taken it to the shop for cable replacement. I am hoping too use this experience to learn and expand my skill set.

Interesting side note is the front wheel is stamped with 1977 but the 1977 catalog page for the AO-8 shows stem mounted shifters. Everything else about the photo on the catalog page looks the same.
