Speaking of chains, my SRAM PC-1090 chain is showing noticeable signs of wear after only about 1,500 miles. What should I go with next? Shimano Ultegra 10 or KMC X10.SL (gold of course)?

I think they look great, and the KMC X10sl is a great chain.

just lube and wipe with a rag or shop towel.

I've gotten a few snide comments about mine, but most people seem to like it. My first KMC chain (an old X-10) got over 6k miles. I expect this one and the silver KMC X10SL on my other bike to be pretty durable too.
you can see in this pic that the rollers aren't coated.

Then you'd better replace the chain before it actually "wears out". As the chain wears the distance between the pins gets longer. Since the pitch has changed it will start to wear on your cassette teeth. Eventually your cassette will not work with a "new" chain because your old elongated chain has effectively "re-machined" your cassette to match itself.
Check your chain wear by holding a ruler up against your chain. The distance between 12 pins should be exactly 12 inches. If it is more than 12.125 inches it's time for a new chain.
EDIT:
The gold chain is hawt. Rock/run/rub it with abandon.

The silver KMC X10SL is the same price as the gold. You pay for the hollow plates, etc. The coating on the gold chain is just a durability bonus, supposedly.

When I was a yout bike racer in the late 70's my bike had a Regina Oro chain and freewheel.
Fast foward 30 years and now only my Ducati has a Regina Oro chain on it.
I'm sure Regina still makes bicycle chains, but I havnt bothered to look for them.
Is there a 9sp version of the gold KMC?
