My back went out again on March 5, knocking me off the bicycle for over two weeks. Until May of last year, I never understood the concept of a back "going out", but now unfortunately, I do. Backs can just seem to go south suddenly and for little apparent reason! ACK! I am seeing an ortho doctor, using a TENS unit for temporary pain relief and will be back in physical therapy once the ortho comes up with the plan. But I'm just thankful to be back on the bike at this point, even if I'm not getting the speed or the miles I wish for.

March Goal: 240 miles

March 1 - 20.3 miles
March 2 - 11.1 miles
March 3 - 11.8 miles
March 17 - 8.2 miles
March 18 - 9.3 miles

March to date: 60.7 miles

2022 total to date: 148.8 miles
2022 Goal: 2,200 miles

All my miles are outdoor miles on a 2011 Fuji Absolute 3 (unless otherwise noted) - my backup bike is a 1997 Trek 830.

First ride on my new bike tonight, a Trek FX Sport 4. Carbon fiber, can't believe how much lighter than my Mongoose. So nice to ride a new, modern bike. I was 5 minutes faster than my best time over my usual route. And the climbs were easier, even though I was more or less in the same gears.

I'm glad you are back riding. I've also started having back problems. Not often, but twice in the last 5 years my back has gone out from just bending down to pick up something like a piece of paper. Last time was in early February. At times I could barely walk. Set me back for a couple of weeks each time, although I was able to ride without much pain long before I was really right. Maybe because I don't have drop bars, I don't know. I'm going to try lower back strengthening exercises before I consider an ortho for now.

Hope you get this squared away.

Thanks for sharing your experiences and your kind thoughts.

I am seeing an ortho, but I am NOT considering back surgery. Fortunately the ortho hasn't mentioned surgery, but I've got several friends, family and former co-workers who've had back surgery, and none has really had good enough results to make me want to consider going that route.

I hope your back continues to do well. Physical therapy was really helping me for 8 or 9 months after the first episode I had, but eventually it started getting worse, even though I continued the PT exercises.

All the best,

Jay

Agree with you there, Jay. Just seems like surgery has to be a last resort, I also can't think of too many people I know where back surgery was totally successful, and it sometimes even makes things worse.

Almost got run over by an Audi Q7 tonight. I was about halfway across a street in a crosswalk when he came up from behind me to make a left turn onto the road I was crossing. If he hadn't stopped a couple feet short of my front wheel I wouldn't have had a chance. The guy abandoned the turn and decided to keep going straight. Not sure how he didn't see me sooner. I thought about this, and I probably should have been extra cautious and looked back over my right shoulder just to be sure nobody was coming.

Also a first for me tonight - we live on a short but very steep hill. I always stop at the bottom and walk around a bit to regain my legs, then walk up. Tonight I rode up for the very first time. Not sure I'm going to do that again soon, it was pretty brutal. But I made it.

Hi folks !
It’s been awhile.
I’ve been having trouble getting back started riding this year , mainly because of knee pain .
Every time I ride , even just a couple of miles on my converted mountain bike or my Schwinn CrossCut my knees give me fits for several days .
Today I rode my Electra Cruiser 1 , single speed for a couple of miles . It has pedal forward geometry and is supposed to be easier on the knees. I had thought at one time switching frames was what caused my issue .
Feels ok for now .
BTW , I’ve been walking averaging over 10,000 steps a day for the last six months and that hasn’t hurt my knees . Crazy .
I miss riding , although since the doctor has me on a blood thinner, if it’s not over fifty degrees, it’s too cold for this old man to ride .
Hope to get back on a regular ride schedule soon !

Great to hear from you! At least you've been able to say active, that is so important. Hopefully you'll be able to get riding again soon. I think we're all looking forward to temps over 50F. At least those of us above the Mason-Dixon line.

back from Texas Spring Break. Rode 143 Miles on 6 days on Trinity Trail System in Fort Worth then the River Walk Trail System in San Antonio. Jealous of all of you that have these extensive trail systems to vary your rides...

Total for the month up to 253, hope to get another 50 this week to make 300 for March.

Hope to get back on a regular ride schedule soon !
nice to see you posting.

Goal: 1.2k miles (400 a week)
status: I don’t know like 400 or 500?
way off my target. Kind of embarrassing to be frank. Gotta lose 50lbs and I’ll still be over 200 lbs
