Been watching Formula One on Netflix. I enjoy the insider views and seeing the other side of racing. Pretty cool little series. It's at 3 seasons right now and no idea if it's still ongoing.


Jupiter's Legacy- Someone trying to cash in on the success of The Boys (which is astounding, by the way). Apparently there were issues with direction and creation of this series right from the get go. The various people brought in and replaced on that end didn't make a good case for what, by all accounts, is a very tellable story. It was (thankfully) put out of it's misery right away.

We're binge-ing it right now. We're on S3, E5, and so far its been okay... just okay.

Titus Welliver is an enigma. He's truly a deadpan. His body motions are stiff and kind of weird. When he stands, his posture sucks. His shoulders are rounded and droopy, and he craned his head and neck in awkward directions to face other actors during dialog. He's a little flabby, and definitely does not fill the shoes of this lead role. I like the show, but I can't see why it has lasted for 7 seasons.

The best actors on this series in my humble opinion are: Lance Reddick (Irving), and Paul Calderon (Santiago).

The series plays out like a nighttime soap opera. The sets and scenes are weak, but I will have to say that they nail it every now and then with great background scenery, especially the nighttime view of the city from Bosch's splendid house in the hills. I love the noir aspect of this series, and I've always been fan of LA-style noir. I also like the theme music, and the music within the episodes. They nailed that part of it.

Way too much dialog - so much that its easy to get lost in it. The script writers clearly havent mastered the art of adding information to the plot without the characters beating it to death verbally. I find that if I am tired or even the slightest bit distracted, I will lose some bit if important info and need to back it up to give it a second look.

Once is a while there is comedic elements that will make me burst into laughter. Rare in this show, but fun when it happens.

There is also a lot of scenes in this show that challenge my sense of reality, and the world as we know it. Its just so hard to swallow that the big wheels in the government of the city of LA have a personal interest in speaking directly to Bosch. In real life there would be many layers of asskissers between the mayor and Bosch, or even the police commander, Irving, and Bosch.

Overall I rate Bosch a 3/5. Its not a must-watch, but worth it if you invest some time into it.

We're ending up the first season of House of Cards. I wasnt impressed with the first few episodes, but it started getting good by about episode 8. Kevin Spacey, regardless of what you think of him morally, is one of the finest actors you could watch. His portrayal of the character is chilling. Despite this, the series has some stupid premise and clunky mechanics to it, and I give it a hearty 6/10.

16 episodes of Combat! from a library 4 DVD disc set of the first season. I liked that show when I saw many of the episodes when they were originally broadcast in 1962-63.
Noticed many actors who were or became stars as guest stars or in the cast. Also some were or became prominent players in Hollywood. Robert Altman directed 10 of the first season's episodes, Burt Kennedy directed some and Richard Matheson wrote some of the teleplays/scripts.

The principal characters and the plot in the first episode of the first season were all laid out in the short story "Fire in the Hole," one of nine stories in the Elmore Leonard 2003 book, "When the Women Came Out to Dance." This book has been retitled "Fire in the Hole and Other Stories. Highly recommended and may be available from your library as well as for purchase from on-line sources. If you like the show you should check out the Elmore Leonard oeuvre in both books and the movies based on them (Out of Sight, Get Shorty, Jackie Brown, and 3:10 to Yuma are among the best)

We just watched the original six-episode mini-series Roots based on Alex Haley's novel. First time for me since it came out in the late-1970s, first time for my wife ever!
Two things about it surprised me:
- it really only traces three generations; in the final episode Koonta Kinte's grandson Chicken George is still alive, his granchildren have barely been acknowledged, it's still the 19th Century and the Civil War has only just ended. Somehow I had misremembered that the show traced all the generations from Koonta Kinte up to Alex Haley, but there's just a brief 30-second epilogue where Haley names all the relatives in his lineage that bring the family up to modern times.
- the incessant use of the N-word must've really freaked the living crap outta folks in 1977! It's almost axiomatic that a show about slavery in America is going to include that epithet, but I definitely didn't remember hearing it that frequently when I watched the original show on television 40-something years ago.

My wife was super-impressed by the makeup artistry, how the folks who aged genuinely looked like they were older, not just wearing goop on their faces. Turns out that was courtesy of Academy Award-winning makeup effects creator Stan Winston.

Decided to rewatch the 5 seasons of "The Wire." I already know that is 10+ and is well worth another viewing. Watched the first 4 episodes from Season 1 last night and will continue on Sunday night; Saturday is set aside for College Football.

We just finished up the last season of Goliath. This series is typical of many series, where after a few seasons, they run out of things to write about, so you wind up with overly-long scenes of people staring into blank space, supposedly so you can read their angst (?), just to stretch out and episode without adding any real content. Billy Bob Thornton, as an actor, is good for the lead role in this series, but the shining star here is, Nina Arianda. Her portrayal of her character was spot-on, and she breathed a lot of life into what would otherwise be another sluggish attempt at capturing a moody, noir-infused series. I'll give it 3/5 stars.

I have a thing about any movie or show that is dubbed. Drives me nuts. Mostly because I am half deaf and can't read lips alongside watching. Captioning gets on my nerves as well, so...
