Does anyone know the identity of the Legnano knight? He reminds me a bit of the Rathausmann badge on the seat tube of Capo #2. Here is a friend's "Rathausmann," which the frame painter unfortunately left on the bike during the silver repaint.

Dunno.... All I can tell you is that it was low end and made in Japan. I only had it a week.

Anyone know off hand the average life span of a bicycle manufacturer? Seems to me new ones are appearing all the time. Then again, I've got my eyes peeled for them. A lot of new names but not so many interesting new badges!
I remember in shop class making a cast metal logo from a self-made mold... it's a lot of work to do something nice.
It's a shame, in my opinion, that new top-of-the-line racing frames - the most expensive stuff - don't feature headbadges with more character.
But, it's nice to see craftsmanship coming back with folks willing to pay for lugwork, braze-ons and the like in custom and small-production steel. (Jonny, Sachs, Mariposa, et al.)
It's like Jay Leno said: "It used to be that labour was cheap, and technology was expensive. Now it's the other way around."

Unique Vintage Steel
seems Fender killed the thread with that very unique, uh, guess you could call it a headbadge! Giving this thread a bump as I'm thinking of adding a Headbadge gallery to VeloBase and need more photos when it is launched.

Good idea of a headbadge gallery for VeloBase. There were scores of brands sold during the 70's-80's, samples of which are still rolling around out there. The small list in the Dancing Chain book is only a sample.
I've got some more images on a different computer that I can dig out.

I've started work on the headbadge gallery. (not to hijack the thread too much) No time frame for completion as I'm going to make this a stepping stone to phase 2 of the VeloBase development which means I'll be writing additional back-end code that may slow things down some.
Now, back to the headbadges!

Everyone seems to love this one, and as far as I know, I'm the only one on BikeForums to have one. My 1940 HR Bates BAR

Here is the headbadge from my Ca. '53 Chemineau. It is a French route sign.

I have an Armstong, Londoneer, and some other English one up to offer, if they're still around.
I'd like to see a cool J C Penny stick-figure type one that was only in the very edge of another picture.

My first "real" bike was an orange Coventry Eagle ten speed with exactly that badge. Oh how I polished it....

Unfortunately it's not mine and I've never seen a Coventry Eagle bike let alone had the joy of owning one.

After owning that bike (at 10 years old or so), I definitely considered myself a Coventry Eagle man, and my first new road bike, at 15, was their top of the range Kermesse - all 531, Gippieme gruppo, sadly it got stolen. It was the only one I ever saw outside of their catalog, and the internet reveals nothing about it - if I ever find one for sale in my size, I'll buy it in a second. What it didn't have, sadly, was the groovy headbadge. I could of course put one of my own on....

Terrible I should know the answer to that question but all I remember is that it was a piece of jewelry belonging to the bike owner pounded out to fit the shape of the head tube. Creative, huh?
I saved the image so I could be a copy-cat on a bike I'm putting together......

I will be posting my Viking headbadge (from a Hosteller model built in Wolverhampton, England), I don't think I've seen it anywhere else on the net (at least that particular one), I'm redoing the frame and will be touching up the headbadge to bring it back to it's former glory
