Shimano Dura Ace ST-9000 hood compatibility w/ other models?
Hey all, I'm really hoping that I've placed this enquiry within the correct section & I'm a relative newcomer here, although I've been a member - but only a lurker before now - for several years now.
I'm about to build up my 595 Pro Team with a complete Dura Ace 9000 group-set & while I'd love to find some white shifter hoods for this build, I've been unable to locate them anywhere...however, I've been informed by a seller that they're the same as those from the Ultegra ST-6800 & 105 ST-5800 (& Tiagra 4700/4703), which are available to purchase in white - & while I'd love to simply believe what the seller has told me, I'm well aware that he wants to SELL me something & thus I'd FAR prefer the advice of the very knowledgeable fellas on here!
I've compared photos of the two models online & they certainly look quite similar but it's often many of the little rubber knobs & what-not INSIDE the hoods that make all of the difference & I've searched everywhere that I can think of - both throughout this awesome site & everywhere else that Google may have been able to guide me after a myriad different search terms that I've entered - but I just can't find anything either way, plus I'm also thinking that if they are cross-compatible, then why do the ST-6800/ST-5800/ST-4700/ST-4703 NOT also list the Dura Ace ST-9000 hoods/bracket covers with them?!
Thanks so much in advance for your time...cheers & best wishes for now from "Down Under"...Matt.

Nope, they aren't going to work. Different part #'s. You can look this up at si.shimano.com, go to 'road', then 'Dura Ace' or 'Ultegra', then find the EV (exploded view) of the component you're looking for. The hoods (Shimano calls them 'bracket covers') are #12.
Dura Ace: Dura Ace 9000 EV
Ultegra: Ultegra 6800 EV
Dura Ace: Dura Ace 9000 EV
Ultegra: Ultegra 6800 EV

Hello mate,
Thanks so very much for your über-prompt reply to my enquiry, it's very much appreciated...
Yeah, I'm well aware that they're different part numbers - ST-6800/5800/4700/4703 & ST-9000 - & I mentioned that, as well as the fact that they're referred to by Shimano as "bracket covers" rather than hoods...however, I'm thinking that because Shimano is fighting a never-ending - & increasingly difficult - effort to keep the Dura Ace line at the very top of their hierarchy, perhaps that's why they won't list their Dura Ace 9000 hoods with those for the Ultegra/105/Tiagra lines? And as I previously stated, I already own several spare sets of the black ST-9000 hoods but they never made them in white for the ST-9000 & thus I've been informed that the ST-6800 hoods will also fit the ST-9000 shifters, plus a number of sellers on eBay also add the ST-9000 to their listings for the ST-6800/5800/4700/4703...
Anyway, thanks so much once again for your time & efforts to assist me, campionissimo!
Cheers & best wishes once again from "Down Under"...Matt.

different part numbers only means they are different parts, not that they are incompatible.
I have an Ultegra groupset - I hated the chrome "nameplate" on the Ultegra brifters, the nameplate on the Dura Ace is identical, but black (different part number), but dimensionally the same. I swapped them on and they fit perfect.

Hey Nick
Thanks heaps for getting back to me, mate...yeah, I'm well aware that different part numbers don't necessarily equate with the incompatibility of Dura Ace & Ultegra components & replaceable parts but in this case, I'm simply hoping to discover whether the shifters hoods/bracket covers for the Ultegra ST-6800 will also fit my Dura Ace ST-9000 shifters, simply because I want to use white ones & they never made them for the Dura Ace ST-9000...
Thanks again for your time & the hunt for the facts - for better or worse - continues, I guess!
Cheers & best wishes for now from "Down Under", bud...Matt.

Why don't you contact Shimano and ask them? They have phones and computers.

Who needs hoods if you can use grip tape instead?

Dude, you seem pretty cashed up, just looking at your bike list...
Just buy the damn hoods already, and then you can be the one to tell the internet whether this is a thing.
And please stop saying "Down Under"

I just created this account to tell you guys that I tried the Ultegra 6800 hood covers on 9000 dura ace shifters. I searched all over the internet for the 9000 ones since my got cracks in them.
I say while the 6800 don't fit 100%, I'll say they fit 80-90% and you can't really tell the difference until you look close up and see some gaps. So I think it's a viable option. Cheers!

Well, I just created this account to thank you, good sir, for creating an account to bring us this news.
I was beginning to think I need to swap out my levers just cause I couldn't find replacement ST-9000 hoods... but I'll rock the 6800's which seem to be readily available.
Cheers.
Ben.

I'm glad I could help. Damn those covers are impossible to find. I can send you more pictures if you want to see the fit better. But I say noone can tell they are not 100% fit If you don't really inspect them close up. It's like 1mm gaps only (at most, some places no gaps).

In my (impossible) quest to find hood covers for my 9000 levers, I came across this thread. Since another user said 6800 covers mostly worked but none of the pictures work, I thought I'd buy them myself and post some of my own in the hopes that they're viewable.
I've had them on my bike about two weeks now and done multiple rides on them with no issue. They're not a perfect fit, but they're not bad and I never notice them when I'm riding. I don't think anyone would ever notice either unless they're really studying my hoods for some reason. If you're not dead set on the covers being the exact fit, I'd say 6800 covers are the way to go since they're easy to find.
The first photo shows the difference between the 6800 cover (left) and the original 9000 cover (right) side by side. The rectangular "knobs" are aligned differently and that was the biggest issue causing them not to sit flush. By summer, this bike will be my dedicated trainer bike so I'm not too concerned. It's still crazy to me that 9000 covers are so hard to find.
Edit: Just realized I can't post any photos until I have 10 posts, so I guess I'll be back...

Thankfully it's not something I notice at all while riding. I can't feel any difference. My old hood covers were so worn out and peeling so badly that these feel like a significant upgrade, but it's certainly not a perfect fit.

Yeah, that may help them lay a bit flatter. I personally don't think I care enough since this bike will be used for indoor riding only starting later this year, but if I were to do it, I would definitely trim the nubs with the hoods installed because taking them on and off is a real chore.
