91 Univega Alpina Comp

SOLD

This is an early 90's MTB, kind of the golden age of this type of rigid steel-framed mountain bike. It's a Univega Alpina Comp, a racing bike with Ritchey and Suntour's high-level components of the time. I recently did a complete overhaul (everything disassembled, cleaned, regreased, new bearings), so it's in excellent condition and ready to go for thousands more miles. In addition, this frame will easily take modern drivetrain upgrades. I have taken it on a handful of short rides since the overhaul on paved paths.

It's a bit too big for me, and I just bought a different MTB frame that will suit me better -- otherwise I would keep it.

It is pictured with fenders, but I have removed them, and they are not included in the sale.

Details:
- Tange MTB double butted biaxial oval frame, 20.5" (CTC) seat tube, 23" (CTC) top tube
- Ritchey stem/bars, brake arms/levers, seat post, headset, rims
- Suntour XC Comp rd, fd, 175mm crank, and pedals, XC Pro index 7s thumb shifters
- 26" wheels with used Kenda Small Block 8 tires
- Selle Italia saddle
- New Jagwire cables and housing

Asking $200 $180, currently local pick up in SF bay Area only.

Hey would you mind sharing the first 4 positions of the serial number? I have what I thought was a '91, but the markings are different. Now I'm thinking mine is a different year.

Thanks, mine is AL9112.... so maybe mine's a '92. Nice bike; that spatter paint job is such an icon of the time.

I’m just a hair under 5’9”, and I think in its current form, I am too stretched out with the 130mm stem and straight bars. I changed out the bars earlier to Nitto Albatross bars (same stem), and it was fantastic. I just found a smaller Univega MTB frame from the early 80’s, and it will allow me a drop bar conversion if I want to - just in general, greater flexibility with the smaller size for me. On this bike, I would not be able to use drop bars without a shorter stem.

The frame is wonderful — rigid with quick handling. I will likely keep my eye open for a smaller size one if I end up not liking the 85 Alpina. If I had the space to keep both, I would.

Univega

That would be a cool addition!!!
I'm 6 foot. It sounds like it would fit well.

Sadly I am I. Ohio.

Best of luck.

I don’t care for those huge tires but that is a fabulous bike.

I should add that I am willing to drop it off somewhere if you are able to arrange a facilitator— I just want to avoid packing and shipping it myself. Don’t trust myself to do a good job…

Do you mind sending close up pictures of how you mounted the fenders? Please and thank you.

Do you mean at the axles? The bike has no eyelets, so I used these from Velo Orange:
