Your Ride Reports - July 2021

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Ride Reports - July 2021

If you are new to posting on this thread, or if you are new to cycling, we welcome you! If you are returning from a previous thread, we welcome you, too.

This thread is for anyone who rides a bicycle ... or unicycle, tricycle, tandem, etc.

Are you an experienced road cyclist? Do you bike to work? Do you pull your children to the park? Do you ride weekends? Do you spin at home or in the gym? Is Zwift your thing? Do you race crits, ironman, or centuries? Touring? Audax/Randonneuring?
Or are you just starting out and remembering how much fun you had biking when you were a kid?

There are no set challenges - this is a mixed-ability / mixed-experience / everyone welcome group.

Just pick the target that you would like to achieve this month and post updates throughout the month as you work toward your target. We love seeing photos of your rides and hearing all about them.

Given the current situation many of us will be cycling solo or indoors. Don't feel alone! Share your accomplishments with us.

I had big riding plans for July 4th week in the Ocala Nat. Forest. However, it rained most of the time due to TS/hurricane Elsa. I got in three rides. On the good side they were pretty nice. On Monday I rode 45 miles. I had a bear run in front of me about 10 yards away. That was exciting. Tuesday I went on the unpaved road I wanted to explore, but had been closed due to construction. It was open this time and I found the dirt went on for quite awhile before turning to pavement again and linking up with some other roads. Tons of exploring to be done in the future. 40 miles total. Thursday did another 40 miles through mostly forest roads.

Rowan and I are attempting to cycle at least one 50 km ride in each month of this year.

July's 50K is done! Bit chilly and windy on the way out, not so bad on the way back. Starting temp 5C (Feels like -0.7). Highest temp 10C (Feels like 4).

Thankfully we got it in before the weather turns. Apparently we're to have a winter storm system come through along with abnormally high tides.

Did an overnight last weekend. 27 miles on an unpaved trail then 5 of hills on road, with double digit grades. Return the same way Sunday. Heat index over 100 degrees Saturday. Managed to cook dinner between the two bouts of thunderstorms. Descending 14% is much easier than climbing it.

Finished up yesterday morning with a disappointing 52.25 miles for my FULL MOON ride that began shortly before the FULL MOON at 10:26pm Friday night. First time this year I didn't complete a FULL MOON 100 miler but I'm still hurting from my 4th of July crash at the 100 mile mark of 102 total miles. Had a disappointing Birthday Ride 15 days ago of 115 miles also being a first time not completing my Double Age + 1 mile for Good Measure distance.

Tomorrow is the 9th Anniversary of a good friend's "Death by a Semi" while biking and I am hoping I can ride another 100 miler again in his Honor. Pains and rain forecasted so ????

Did my usual 60 miler in Southern Westchester up to Northern Westchester. As usual, had to ride the MUP for a 5 mile section each way in between roads. On the way back, ran into hordes of cyclists taking part in the "Empire State Ride". Bikers were pace-lining at 25-30MPH on a heavily populated trail. Since many of these participants were from NYC, they had no clue how many people use this MUP. Had a couple of near misses with people riding 2/3 abreast, very high speeds and very bad road manners. There were no signs or announcements to let the general public know of the event so that they can plan around it. A hot mess.

Other than that, was a nice ride with a lot of green on the ride with the unseasonally heavy rains we have been having. Supposed to be a baking week coming up. Stay safe, everyone

Two Saturdays ago went to Upper Tampa Bay trail for 40 miles. Two Sundays ago did my usual S. Tampa ride for 42 miles. This Saturday headed N.E. for a change. I had been avoiding a certain neighborhood were I got in an altercation with a street person a couple of times. He was nowhere to be found. 40 miles to Thonotosassa. Sunday went N.E. again for a 44 mile ride to Flatwoods trail.

Yesterday I drove to Galveston TX to bike along the seawall. The weather was hot but the wind was light. You see bike ride highlights at my YouTube channel.

I was back in the Ocala Nat Forest this weekend. Saturday I completed my quest to find a house I was stalking on Zillow. Nice house, but not a location I would have been that interested in. Otherwise a pretty good 45 mile ride. Sunday rode to Wildcat lake for 40 miles. It was hot a heck. I got rained on the last 1/2 mile. I would have loved the rain a half hour earlier.

I did this climb the last time I posted but did not take a video. I thought I'd post one here from the same ride (the descent) but when I did a year ago. It was the only time I used a GoPro. I shoudl do that once in a while.

Looks like 400 miles for July, 50 miles running, the rest cycling. Neck pain is still limiting my ride time/distance to around 90-120 minutes or 30 miles or so. I tried for a couple of longer rides in July but bailed out after a couple of hours due to neck pain. Still, good to be riding more again.
