1961 Hetchins: How would you build?
Good chance that a friend will be selling me this 1961 Hetchins Experto Crede frameset. It’s been refinished by Mercian with some braze-one added. How would you build it?

Was the rear spacing changed to go along with the braze-on cable stops?

I'd sell it to me if I were you,
I just picked up a set of campy gran sport derailleurs for a 1958 Claud Butler I'm rebuilding. Those are likely the best period correct derailleurs you can get. TA crank or maybe a cottered Williams crank? Period correct campy hubs? GB brakes? That's more or less what I'm doing on my Claud Butler.

I am with @John E. but I would go with Universal Mod 61 center pulls. Campy close to period.

I've had a couple of Raleigh Lenton Grand Prix bikes from this era, including that 49/46 crankset and a corn-cobbish rear cluster, and even with that relatively limited ask, they still shifted like crap.

It's gonna take a lot of polishing to make that headset locknut shine.
Duh! Or stem shifters...
This bike would still look sharp if you installed a Taiwanese DNB derailleur on it.
How much would it cost to gold plate an early-1960's Campy Record RD?

for the date a Williams AB77 might well be plausible (nominal launch date '62)
NITOR flat rail pillar & saddle
Brampton Alatet headset
GB sidepull arrestors Sport Mk. III, if centrepull preferred the Coureur 66 launched in '61
if Weinmann centrepull preferred then definitely the deluxe anodised finish sub-model
GB Hiduminium stem/bar set...or Reynolds...or Titan
Airlite large flange hubs with riveted flanges
how about some Phillips Credalux or Philite pedals
alternate gear ensemble: Juy 5-4-3 with Juy Competition or Randonneur manual front mech, year is final one for Juy manual front mechs
Colorol bottles and cages in anodised finish colour to complement that of frame
---
Brit component makers were beginning to fall away by this time so the fitment of continental bits all the more plausible...
Resilion for example pretty much defunct

Very nice.
not Sure on centerpull brakes, did not Hetchins back then provide for a rear cable stop?
Campag bar end controls
which suggests Campag derailleurs.
beyond that, up to your spending tolerance.
was Airlite still making hubs in 1960?
blue anno flanges...
or, be subversive, Odom super high flange hubs also Blue anodized just to be ... unique.
this frame set up for “sprints” or 27” wheels?

Thanks for the input so far! Not sure about wheel size, but I have some fairly long reach GB side pull brakes that will likely accommodate 700c. But I also have a nice 27” wheelset w/ Mavic rims and Maillard hubs that would fit the look. Hmm. I do have to say I’m not particularly keen on a period “sensitive “ build as that era was definitely a low point for derailleur performance. But I do have some Campy in the bin. I tend toward function over form.

So cool, hate to say it and know it is a bit tiring but correct would be a bit challenging and in my view would be great with a tried and true Campy build that would have
been the full on correct upgrade for this after the original build ran it's course.

I'd set that up as a fixed gear, some nice fenders. Ask Rudi to make you a special swallow-ized saddle.

I would probably go with a mix and match friction drive train. SunTour Rd, Fd &barcons. Then Campy High flange hub wheel set, 49D or TA cranks etc. Be able to enjoy riding it while not straying to far from the aesthetic.

The frame is beautiful and has to be ridden, love the lugs.

Build it any decent way, ride it, modify to fit what you liked/disliked on the ride. Upgrade/mod over time as needed to suit your pleasures.
Simple.
Same formula with every 'new' bike.
YMMV.

I tried an English build a couple years ago for my Hetchins. I think I am going to be rebuilding that soon, using period correct parts that are more functional, with exception to the much older Marsh bars I have for the frame. I bought the bike from the granddaughter of David Marsh, so the bars seem oddly fitting, even if David did not ever own the bike. They were nice folks and I wish I kept contact info for them. It was fun talking to them about it. Hearing that David lost his job, by riding to the Olympics was sad to hear. Times have changed..
My guess is that I will use a Campy RD and I have not decided on brakes.

Have you seen "Don't f with Cats"? Might be the bike version of that.
