Vintage Bicycle Store in So CAL

Hey all,

Just moved to so cal couple months ago from Nor CAL and ive been looking for vintage bicycle shops around here (generally looking around the LA area and the IE area) but cant find any. Anyone know of one? I know there's people that post on CL about there collection of bikes but wont it be cool if there's an actual shop that sells vintage/used bicycles and repair shop? There's a few up north like that.

I have not found any dedicated shops, but there are several locations that I know of... hbbikeshop in huntington beach, Routes in little tokyo downtown LA on onizuka street (actual shop), used bike 310, yourbicyclebroker, and Coco's variety store (actual shop). There is a shop in San Diego that deals with fully restored CV bikes at a hefty premium and they look amazing... if I find the address I'll repost. It's tough in LA for the most part, so maybe somebody else has some ideas! I'll definitely be checking back on this thread... =) Good luck.

EDIT: Velo Cult San Diego is the store.

Little place in Laguna Hills at LaPaz and Moulton. Huge inventory of Colnago and Celo Europa lugged frames. Shoes with real cleats etc. It's spendy but there it is. There is a Store in Newport Beach that specializes in fixie conversions and has some old parts. Newport and 18th. They also sell vintage cameras too. (if they sold guns too, I'd move in).

Where in LA are you looking? IN the northern part, like pasadena of Glendale, there's Open Road besides Velo(the owner an Armenian, I can't spell his name. rode for the Russin national team in the late 70's or early 80s. Good guy). Then, there's Steve at Open road. He's funky, but honest. I have known him for 25 years, so I know how he works. Fairly young guy but working on becoming a bitter old bastard. Give him a shout. I think the guy in Glendale is Bicycle Mark. He's at the corner of Brand blvd and San Fernando road. Actually he on Brand about one block notrh of S fernando. YOu can't miss it. He's got a bunch ( I mean a lot of sh*t) of old racing stuff and putting together a bicycle museum. They both have a bunch of stuff. With steve, all that crap's in the back or upstairs, earn his trust, he will let you go in the back and dig through his crap. these were the guys that use to slapped me in the back of the head to get me to take a pull in the training ride in the 80 when I was a Jr. Really, they really did that, those butt heads. They know what they are talking about, but just on their way to becoming bitter old bastards.

I don't know about Coco's. I was in there once looking for a bolt, but found a bunch of kids hanging out in there and they had not many pro grade stuff, but regular bikes and a bunch of fix gears hanging on the wall.

thanks a lot guys for your replies.

ive been rebuilding and selling new and used bikes up north for a year now and im craving on doing it again down here.

my wife and i thought it would be cool to open a lil' shop like that around here (san bernardino area) and see what happens. but first i want to get a feel of how i would do through craigslist. most of the big guys on craigslist that sell are in the LA/OC area, but none in the inland empire area. and the shops ive searched are also in the LA area but not in the IE area.

any ideas or thoughts would be really helpful?

There is a shop in Ojai which sells a few vintage and classic rides. I think they are called Bicycles of Ojai. Quant little shop based in a house where their main business comes from specialized but i did see a ton of steel bikes.

I will have to get by there, maybe even this weekend.

A thanks to all who put forth shops in this thread, I get too busy to "search", many of these places have little or no web front, so if one cannot explore the countryside you just don't know.

If you get a chance go check out the Strawberry Bike shop in downtown Hemet, Ca, which is only about 30 mi from San Berdo. Don Neal (proprieter) opened the shop in the mid 1970's and has been there ever since. It is right downtown on the main street (Florida Ave). I have not been there for several years, so hopefully he is still around! Good luck.

I've just moved to the Bay Area (well, Santa Cruz really) and am looking for a good shop for vintage bike stuff/parts. Can you recommend any shops? I drive up to the city from time to time, so anywhere up there would be good.

I don't know where you were up north? I think, for the most part, it is cycling friendy and more people are doing it then down here. I hate to be so negative and burst your bubble. The inland empire may not be the hot bed for bicycles like LA, Pasadena, or Santa Monica. Why do you think they are mostly in the LA area? LA is funny place and you must understand it geographic location and how and what type of people will buy a certain things. Your target market is very very important. Do a little research before you invest too much into it. I am a business owner, so I am real careful about stuff like that. for example, you will never find a starbucks in South central LA. Well, maybe they are there, but I haven't been there in a very long time. But, you know what I mean. Craigs list is very local, I am nt going out there to buy a used bike unless it is something I must have. What kind of stuff are you looking for in there bike shops? Older pro grade stuff of just general bicycle stuff.

Visit San Diego on a weekend and see Velo Cult in San Diego's South Park area https://www.velocult.com/ and see Pacific Coast Cycles in Oceanside on Coast Hwy 101 on the south end of Oceanside above Buena Vista Lagoon. Lots of vintage bikes at these shops.

Do your research. San Berdoo is part of the Inland Empire and is completely different from the West Side or Pasadena. There are some colleges you might locate near in Riverside, Claremont, Loma Linda

Just thought I would bump this up. So what are the preferred vintage road shops - mechanics for Greater Los Angeles? I was at Velo Pasadena (I think) around 10 years ago...I think they wrench on old school stuff. Someone mentioned Bici in Santa Barbara - no longer there, he was on State St.

When I'm down there visiting family in Pas I always find a reason to drop by this place: it's humble, homey, messy, not strictly your C&V specialist but the owner is a stand-up guy (or al least he has been for me, but could be it's always around Xmas and he's rolling in the dough, I dunno) But check out:
Steve's Bike Shop
843 E Mariposa St . Altadena CA (just off Lake Ave.)
Open ⋅ Closes 5PM · (626) 798-8703

Open Road Bicycles has moved to Altadena, near the corner of Lake and Altadena Dr. Steve is still everything there- owner, chief mechanic, bookkeeper, bottle washer. He and I worked at Euro Asia Imports 32 years ago so he has hands-on experience with stuff from BITD.
