It's one of the terms you agreed to when you signed up. You can delete your posts or request a ban, but accounts aren't deleted because if someone had a lot of posts, it would mess up the server.

Are you referring to the ability to delete an individual post, or all of your posts? And if the latter, then what's the difference?

You can go through all of your posts and delete them one at a time if you want. Those with less than 100 posts might do it and it won't have much of an effect on the server. People with thousands of posts aren't likely to do it, and those are the ones that will cause hiccups.

Big, popular threads have had problems loading when a lot of posts were deleted. The deleted posts cause phantom pages to appear because the server thinks the thread has more posts than it shows. If you ever see a thread that shows it has 300 pages but you can only get 299 of them to load, that's due to deleted posts.

Ahhh, What about the ones that are off by lots more than 1 page

Weird that they don't bother updating the cached statistics over time.

Fixed for accuracy.

Here is an idea: Find this guys ID (it's probably 168313) and update all the posts tables and thread tables so the ID is actually Pcad's. It's probably quicker to do in SQL. The posts don't go away and we'll have lots of fun quoting him!

I'm a hardware engineer. I have no idea what your post is referring to.

You are evil. I like that, there is potential in you.

Unfortunately knowing these systems that is NOT easy. These things are always so over complicated, over engineered, over normalized

I was going to say if you delete all of Pcad's posts, the entire system would cease to exist, imploding in a blaze of glory

But yeah an nice "update posts values userid=<pcad's user number> where userid=168313;" would be fun, too... exact SQL depends on the backend DB, of course.

And the fact that 2% of the system uses usernames instead of user id.
There's also a random ID that is unrelated to the username or the user id but somehow manages to match up most of the time that is used in .1% of the scenarios.

And the user id to post is not a 2 or 3 table relationship. No it is a conglomerate that spans 13 tables or 17 if you signed up after 2007 or 22 if you are a paid member or 33 if you are a mod.

I am digging this data model. Sounds like our student data here.

Yeah, sadly it pretty much describes every large system I've had to come in and clean-up, troubleshoot performance problems or convert.
