Addiction 2021.1

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I looked at some of the info on the VW ID.4, but I’m not super thrilled with the quality of some parts on my Passat and am not sure I’d get another one.
I’m partial to the Highlander, having had two of them over the last 7 years (long story). COVID-19 put a stop to our carpooling 4 teenage boys (and a 9 year old since she can’t be left alone in the house while boys were being driven) to school. Even with its gas guzzling looks, it actually gets near-to-better mileage than my Volvo S60 I used to own before (though it may say more about the Volvo than the Highlander).

that being said, the only out-of-urban drive it got was a 600 mile trip (and back), so it seems an EV would have been perfectly fin had I had the financial chops to justify paying double for a Model X.

I don’t know what the future is for vehicular transportation, but I know that internal combustion engine as we know it is living its final years. My mind says fuel cell powered electric cars are the future, but if this day’s practicality continues as it is, battery powered electric cars will have us watch another Beta vs VHS battle.

My wife wants to replace the van with a rav 4 or CRV. I really like the MDX but that is more than I want to spend. Plan was or me to get a truck in a year or two, but I might just take the van and let her get a new car. I don’t really use my car for much, and once flying picks back up I will be using the car even less.

The point is that everything being said about electric cars not being ready for consumers was perfectly true maybe 6 or 7 years ago. But not so much now.
Frac sand mining isn’t so pretty either, but essential to current US oil production. Neither is salt water injection. There are always trade offs.

The RDX is also one to consider as alternative to the Toyota and Honda. All solid choices though.

I've been watching some vintage bike restoration videos on YouTube. One particular guy in Britain seems to put out a LOT of these, maybe one week or two. Of course he also sells them on his website, but he finishes each resto off with a ride, which is really kinda cool. I mean, it's one thing to see a beautifully restored bike on the shop floor, but seeing them out in the wild, being ridden, sometimes being sprinted on, that's nice.

He does seem to have a liking for white bar tape and hoods, which looks great - at first! - but the first time you have to fix a flat on the road........

Yesterday I wore a gift tee shirt my SiL gave me awhile ago. I think it’s appropriate on more than one level.

Good shirt. You are probably too young to get the reference, but it would be better if it. Said, “Bite my....”

Liked.

Maybe we need a “show us your bike-related (not team kit) tee shirt” thread.

Today is a total washout weather-wise. I did a brief recovery ride in the basement and now relaxing with some good French Press coffee.

HBD to Jack Brohamer, who remains the only MLB player to hit a home run in a regular season game wearing team-issued shorts.

Has someone hit one wearing unauthorized shorts?

There's a break in the rain but now we have gusty winds. I do not want to end up with a sleeping bicycle.

I'd like to go for a little spin but we have ridiculous wind again. Weather people on two different stations have remarked how they don't remember ever having this much wind for this long in our area. I certainly don't.

it's 75 F and gorgeous here in God's country. I did a 20 minute dog walking activity and completed my stretching. Now, its time to cut my hair.
