Despite being in the country-side one never hears a rooster welcoming the sunrise. Perhaps nothing to crow about on a modern chicken farm. The one atop the spire was equally silent.
They crop trees mercilessly here. For the first few years the denuding of big old trees comes as quite a jarring experience but they do recover their splendor if you can wait. I'll keep you posted for these.
The church yard trees seem immune from the tree-surgeon's knife.
The house isn't 11th century like the graveyard but there's not a straight angle in the whole place. Its outer wall actually leans over the road sidewalk.
This old girl definitely needs a trim. It towers over everything.

I've starting commuting again now that the school where I teach has reopened. The commute isn't long, but it's mostly uphill on the way out. Today, this meant some weight training, as my panniers were loaded, including some hefty illustrated books.
In the past, I would usually take the most direct route home. However, I recently discovered a trail that starts near my school. Lately, deciding between the heavily-trafficked paved road and the one through the woods, I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference

46 miles up the coast. We've had a cold snap and temps were in the upper 40s. Wind was blowing from the north and south at the same time somehow. Massive Mayfly hatching - my belly is full.
"Dramatic" use of shadows.
A small gaggle of sailboats out on the lake. Gotta be cold out there.
Trees are almost there - 70/80s are on the near horizon.

A commuting day to Maple Valley - babysitting for daughter who worked nightshift at her hospital. 35mi round trip.
About 45*f yesterday morning - expected 50*s for afternoon return home . Perfect weather for old (worn out tights) WOOL. Viva tifosi.
Oh, also changed out the tires on the Batavus to Conti 5000 in 25mm (actual = 24.5-ish) and they ride hard, not supple @100psi. Oh well, they are on the 'commuter' bike and a Gatorskin-like ride is tolerable if the flat protection is enhanced. But they don't ride like I had hoped.
I love old wool.

We took the tandem out again today for a bit under 25 miles. If you weren't here you missed a gloriously spectacular day for riding, temps in the upper 60's this morning, just enough moderate wind to keep everything fresh. There were about a million bikes out. I counted maybe 90% of them and I figure I missed another 10%.

I did a pretty regular for me; east to Bethany Beach, down to Fenwick Island and then back inland in a random, roaming ride back home. I is my first 50 mile ride of 2021. I have had many days off the saddle this year. I am ready to step it up a bit.

One of my personal spring series rides is to Coney Island, it’s a tad under 50 miler round trip and is a lot of fun. Today, something a little different happened.
There’s a place in Brooklyn, part of the old Navy yards that I’ve ridden past many times. Today, my dad reached out from beyond and asked me to stop and look for him as I passed by. Almost as if I heard his voice.
“The former Naval Hospital Cemetery had been behind a fence, inaccessible to the public since it was decommissioned in the 1920s and the known remains were removed to Cypress Hills.
The site has now come out from behind the fence as a new open space along the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. This site has been designed as a natural area populated exclusively by native plant species and will provide visitors with an escape from urban life.”
I went in and walked to the eastern end where there was a bench overlooking the small field. I noticed the bench had a notebook and pen in a weatherproof slot underneath it. I took it out and saw some reflections and poems others wrote. I added:
Remembering Bernard Scherer
Seaman First Class SV6 USNR
USS Laws (DD-558)
1944-1946
Before I left I spoke with the folks at the entrance for a bit. They explained that sometime recently it was determined that not all the remains were reinterred, and the decision to preserve it as a memorial was made.
I rode on to Coney. I do believe Dad was pleased with both outcomes.

As @jimmuller reported, it was a beautiful day in New England. I took advantage to ride my first century of the year, the first 30 miles heading west from Worcester, MA, train station to Barre, MA, for lunch, and then 70 miles back to Boston, most of that with a nice tailwind (but not all downhill). Just one pic from a snack stop on a rail trail in central MA.

This a fishing lake on the way home at dawn. Fishermen stand at their 'peg' for 48 hours at a go. They catch mostly carp, take a photo and release the fish back into the lake.
I personally don't see the attraction but on mornings such as today it makes more sense just for the beauty. Over 4 million people do it every year.
I swear this house was leaning into the road last time. But it is definitely tumbling away now. Those chimney pots must be at least 3 feet from the vertical . The National Trust has a preservation list on these places. You can't even paint a door without signed consent from 5 different statutory bodies. Even if your family has owned it for centuries, you can do almost nothing without permission. Changing something physically is out of the question.

Mrs non-fixie and I did a short-ish shakedown ride on her latest acquisition (that is, I bought it and she let me ), a Bridgestone Grandtech. The idea was a 2-mile ride around the block to see if everything was alright, do some final adjustments and see if she'd like it at all.
The first try lasted all of 400 yards, after which I had to replace the saddle. The second try went a lot better. We ended up doing a little over 10 miles, discussing handlebar shapes along the way.
A B17S in place, we got under way for the second time:
It was cloudy, cold and windy:
Obligatory bike shot:

Took out the Guv'nor again today instead of one of the road bikes. Primarily did my base 25 mile route around Ogden Valley with some extra miles thrown in to get me to 27 miles. Grey, overcast skies with snows coming again starting this evening. I have to admit, the really is one comfortable ride. About 4 mph less than my average pace on this route but so enjoyable. Could have gone faster if I wanted but treated this as a recovery ride and worked to stay under 120 bpm on the HR.
Oldest saloon in Utah
Spring hasn't arrived yet
Trees are thinking about budding out finally
Typical road surface I ride, this is a better section of chipseal
Ben Lomond Peak in the background
Snowbasin Mt. That road going up is a nice climb of around 8 miles and one I've come down at 50+ mph many, many times.
Dairy Barn in Huntsville
This is one sweet looking ride. Used clamp straps I had to mount the waterbottle. Thick tape under all the metal to protect the paint.
Can't get enough of looking at this sweet path racer.
Old Blacksmith shop in Eden just a few minutes from the house.

My wife and I celebrated my 38th birthday. Rain shortened the ride, but we still managed to ride to the ice cream stop.

Two rides yesterday. New Bike Day to start, an 11-mile shakedown ride of my Univega Super Speciale:
A bit later I hopped on my trusty Schwinn Speedster for a 23-mile ride to pick up spokes from Marcus at Yojimbo's Garage:
The wind made the ride home on the Schwinn a bit more challenging than my knees would have liked. First gear was too low, second too high. (I was in third gear much of the way to YJ.) I need to figure out some change. (It's not clear why a narrower range of gears on Sturmey-Archer hubs wasn't more common.) Most of the time it's fine though, so inertia has kept me from doing anything.

Moonset / Sunrise
Back to early morning rides, roads/paths mostly to myself. Interesting riding towards a full (or nearly full) moon setting and then riding towards a sunrise later.

First semi warm almost 50 degree day this year in Fairplay yesterday so I took ten mile so ride up to Thompson Park in the national forest to see how the bike trails looked. Seems the trails are still a total no go about 3feet of slushy muddy snow on the Ti-Hack trail.
