1985 Mongoose ATM

Treads in hibernation but I just wanted to post my chrome mtb. All the cheap stickers were removed and most rust removed. I've swapped out the seat and added red cable housings.

The Paramount turns 50 this month. It’s in top running form and is basically all I ride anymore.

This is the same 64cm 1965ish Cinelli SC that is pictured on post #61. I had it repainted by Ed Litton after an internal debate for a couple of years. I finally pulled the trigger in Feb-Mar 2020. No new chrome for Covid-related reasons - too long a story to relate here. It's still a magic carpet. (The shorter 1972ish Cinelli SC frame was traded for a 1965ish blue 64cm Cinelli frame within the last 8 months or so.)

I just sold my '74 Nishiki Competition last weekend. The bike is shown above, but it wasn't a great photo. Here's are a couple updated photos for posterity. I wanted to like this bike more than I did. It did it's job, but always felt a little bit sluggish and I never did warm up to the barcons. After spending a bunch of time restoring it, I hardly ever rode it.

Big Paramount that confirmed most of my bikes are a bit too small.

1978 Merz back home in Cascade locks, where it lived when it was built. And the first of big bikes that got me in a better place.

I have the matching Ladies bike. Is your seat post original ? My bike didn't have one when I got it.

I had a similar experience when I got the chrome Pro below yours. 1 cm larger than I usually ride and it's perfect.

I am not entirely sure but I think we grow in to them at a certain point after we ride the ones we have been riding for a long time that are close and we tell ourselves "they're fine, I've been riding them like this for years".

Then we stumble on a bigger one and find out how much better it works.

Perfect as the 63 feels, my 62 Mercian still feels like the best fit. Maybe it's the familiarity, I've had it since 1988.

Is it just me or are there a lot of larger frames in this thread?

Another Big 'un! With a 35" inseam , 63 is perfect. Smallest that works for me is 60.

Definitely some bigger ones here and I'm sure familiarity has plenty to do with it just as it keeps us on some that are a bit small until we finally manage to move out of our comfort zone and realize its bigger than we thought.

Also think our physiology has a lot to do with it, we don't always know whats good for us but our bodies do and once our mind gets on board we can get there. Funny or not, the $$$ have too much to do with it.

I was always stuck with a bit too small bikes because bigger ones were not usually in stock and special ordering one was more $$$, so I usually ended up with a size or more small. The big Merz unlatched the equation but it was again about the $$$, it was a very good deal and having bought plenty of too small bikes, I wasn't going to lose any sleep over it if it was too big, it was a Merz so I was going to have it no matter what at the price.

The big Paramount confirmed it, wasn't cheap but was a good deal and from then on the size range was moved up a couple of sizes making smallish ones only considered if a really good deal where as before cool, desirable ones were considered somewhat regardless of $$$ but not anymore.

Looking at how much seatpost is showing on your Paramount you must be a long drink of water. There's period style/trend to account for too. A couple of years after I got the Mercian I had a Fit Kit session, pretty much nothing was changed. My Mk. I is more of a French Fit which was way out of style back then. Modern frames have enough seatpost to fly a flag from!

Well I'm 6ft .05in, was 6'2" way back in the day, have a 38in inseam which is the "biggest" indicator of the problem here, no proper bike fit usually. When I was younger they would say "Oh you're about 6ft, here standover this and you're good to go", more sales BS, of course I could standover them, they were too short but didn't know any better. I did get a couple of bikes that were closer when the salesman said "he'll grow into them" again not actually getting it right, just getting another bike out the door.

The one thing Mr. Petersen gets right for sure is PBH, if you get that right, you're a lot better off, at least a proper inseam measurement.

I believe the seat post is original. I replaced the big puffy seat for a much nicer seat. I've recently seen a couple of these on ebay and they are asking around $1000.00 and they are in sad shape. I doubt they bring that much.?
