Yep, not even sure this will "fly under the radar", its a pretty big deal and target at the end of the day.

Really hope they pull it off, even with say 50 riders, they may get in some kind of trouble.

Again, so jealous.

my guess is maybe 30 riders and they could go off in a couple of waves to stretch out the pace lines. There is registration for only the Sunday ride and probably includes an indemnity waiver for the shop, as we used to have when riding out of a Performance Bike shop ride. But hey, could be many more folks coming than we know of, or heaven fordbid, some of these people didn’t get the email or know the event has been postponed. Hopefully everyone is aware and just coming up for some fun, sun, surf, and riding, plus good food and camaraderie. We should have some name tags to ID ourselves and BF or CR handles.

Piggyback onto Gugie’s travel plans. He has two spots that opened up, or just fly/drive although maybe costly. If you were able to take the train, I could pick you up in Paso or SLO with my minivan and bike rack.

Tx, not in the cards and not traveling amid the uncertainty of all this, simply cannot reconcile any risk, perceived, imagined, contrived, known or unknown at this point.

Also, absolutely not disparaging or begrudging any who have the fortitude to do so, go forth and ride, may the cycling and all other deities smile upon and protect one and all from any and all harm.

Here are some reasons why. The shop ride (or whatever we throw together at the last moment) will have no sag wagons, no radio communications, no rest stops with snacks or porta-potties, no police and/or CHP sorta-kinda looking out for us, and a hell of a lot fewer riders. Start adding this stuff in and the complications (and cost) start growing exponentially.

Sometimes, the "sue-happy PITA" is an insurance company forcing someone's hand. Say you get hurt. Your medical insurance gets you fixed up. But what if the decision makers at the insurance company think there is possible liability on the part of someone else, such as , say, the organizers? If your policy so provides (and it probably does), the insurance company can make you sue, or can step into your shoes and sue, to recover the medical costs, even if you don't want to. This is especially likely if the target has assets and/or insurance themselves. You won't have a choice if you want to keep your medical insurance and/or don't want the insurer to come after you to pay the bill in a breach of contract suit. So you may end up in the position of being the name on a lawsuit against the organizer even if you don't want to be.

The two times I rode Eroica, California, I never saw a sag wagon during the duration of my time on the medium course. I'm not going to get into the issues with the rest stops, but let's just say they were often "inadequate". As far as the CHP is concerned, the one instance in which I saw them on the course I was riding single-file with my brother. Up the road a bit was a group of riders riding three abreast. For some reason I've never been able to figure out, the CHP officer rolls up behind ME and screams on his bullhorn/PA system, at an incredibly loud volume "Get out of the road!". The shock almost knocked me off my bike.

Those are issues of execution, and I have no quibble with any of them, except about the SAG wagons. (When my buddy crashed hard early in the 2018 event, a SAG wagon was there to get him back to town and medical treatment.) You asked about cost issues and that's what I addressed. It is something of an apples-and-oranges thing to compare the cost and logistics of a shop ride where people just show up and ride, expecting to be self-sufficient, and an event ride with hundreds of people expecting services. They aren't the same animal. Related, no doubt, and whether one is better than the other is a personal preference, but not the same.

I remember being followed by the broom wagon and official looking people on ATVs asking me if I am the last rider. (I may have been, but how'm I supposed to know?

For 2019, Wally from Wally’s Bikes in SLO was providing support for the ride with his 66 Mustang with hand painted SERVIZIO CORSA on the side.

At Santa Rita Summit there were porta-potties, water, some food, and a paramedic ambulance. At Halter Ranch besides loads of food and volunteers, there was neutral mechanical support. At Cypress Mountain Summit, there was porta-potties, Linn’s preserves for carbs, water, plus local sheriff with 2 cars and 2 ATV’s with deputies, plus saw the Mercedes Sprinter van sag wagon with 2 riders and their bikes inside, plus available room for two more if needed. Each stop had Radio and Ham radio communications that I saw.

in the 2018 ride, there was also a Bike Touring company that had a big pickup with an enclosed bike trailer doing sag work on the short inland route.

Not to mention stops in 2019 in Templeton, Olea Farms and Cass Winery on the long route.

just because you may have missed it doesn’t mean it wasn’t there.

Not to mention the course Marshalls for the Nova part of the event. (That's me on the right).

I'm in Cambria now - arrived about 5:00 today. I plan to join the Velo Cambria Ragged Point ride, and fully expect to be dropped within a mile of the start. The real hope is that I can meet up with the TourRica folks riding down from Ragged Point and watch them bask in the glory of the adoring multitudes as they ride triumphantly into Cambria.

Manny66, meeting up at Velo Cambria for the Lighthouse ride on Saturday sounds good. I hope to see you there. I'm a big guy (6'3", 255lbs) on a 64cm silver old but repainted Cinelli (no chrome on the frame, but with an all-chrome fork) with red cloth bar tape.. I'll almost certainly be in a wool jersey, either a red Cinelli, one, a grey Cinelli one or a light blue Salvarani one. I'm pretty hard to miss.

Warning: I climb like a banana slug. I have been passed by runners and unicyclists going uphill. I blow their doors in on the descents, though.

I'm jealous of those of you riding in Cambria this weekend as the weather will be perfect. I'd love to join you but it's a 1750 mile drive each way. I hope to see everyone in May.

Surgery went well last week, first PT session today.
Hope to be back on a bike by January!

Typing from Ragged Point, last day of Touroica
ride from SF. Tomorrow Id like to do a gentle ride to Sebastian’s in San Simeon and back. Not sure what Sunday ride I’ll want to do.
