bike for friend with little cash
my buddy wants to start riding with me but has very low funds( almost nonexistent). he is a very small rider he weighs like 110 lbs soaking wet. he is like 5'3". i found this bike used by a younger rider for 50$ but i do not know or have i ever heard of this brand (planet earth) the pic is kinda fuzzy it does have a three piece crank and a clamp style head set not a threaded headset. so i was thinking about picking it up for him for x-mas. i have enough spare parts laying around to do some upgrades but pls let me know if this bike would be safe for a cross-country application?
Thanks,
Jollygreen
PS. sorry about the low quality of the pic it is how it was posted.
pps. i already posted this in the mechanic section but i thought twice and figured it would be better here

Id get it and convert to a SS for 30-40 bucks.
Its been my experience that cheap wal-mart derailleurs dont hold up well on trail. He'll probably have more fun too.

Forget the bike, just buy him some lacrosse gear. Lacrosse players are awesome.

How about a better idea?He said he had some spare parts around to upgrade with and if he happens not to have one laying around he could pick up a decent derailleur for about that much. How do you figure he'll have more fun? Do you have any clue about what type of terrain they'll be riding? I know if you took a new rider to 95% of the trails around here on a SS they wouldn't be having too much fun.

But is it good for a beginner and what he is using it for? You already had the chance to figure out what your needs are. This guy is just beginning.
I don't think he is trying to discredit anything you are saying, he is suggesting something useful and more to what the OP is asking.

I am quite confident I have far more experience with beginners. Every saturday we have at least one or two beginners on our ride and quite often they find it more trouble working the gears than pedaling.
Just this past week we put a 20ish y.o. begginer who hadnt ever ridden a mtb before and he had no clue how to shift through gears. We switched him out, and put him on a SS and he was doin great.
I think we are beyond the argument, "everyone is different, what works for you, might not work for someone else" but I am actually talking from experience. Look at the friend you want to put on the bike. Is he in strong enough to push that certain SS gear? Then put him on a SS.

I started "mountain biking" on a single speed bmx bike when I was a kid while saving up for a true mountain bike. It sucked.
Still better than lacrosse.. lacrosse is whack.

Whatever 66...those kids look like freakin' experts, not beginners. At least they could wax an elf.
To the OP...that bike looks a little big for a person that's 5'3". Just sayin. (I know you said it came from a smaller rider, but it doesn't make it right now does it)
Domeafavor...measure the frame from where the crankset bolts to the bottom bracket all the way up to the top of the seat tube. (das how I roll)
Elf: Shut up, you're a noobdork who needs to know when to shut up. Here's your cue...shut up.
