Shimano canti question

I’m putting the brakes back on, Shimano BR650 if I recall, and there are silver and gold springs. Gold on the left side, silver on the right?

Secondly, is the drive side the right side? I get confused as to whether the left side is when you are sitting on it or facing it.

and which way do the plastic backers point, up or down?

I can't remember the answers to your canti questions but obviously the DS is the right side of the bike as you're riding it.

I think I figured it out. The black plastic spring keepers have an R and an L on them. I foolishly assumed that the L side was the left side of the bike and the R side was the right. I now realize the L and the R are for when you are looking at the brakes head on. I had the L keepers on the non-drive side and the R keepers on the drive side.

this is only my second time rebuilding(cleaning and lubricating) cantis.

I'm guessing you actually have BR-R550 brakes? I don't think there was a 650, as they went to the CX numbers after 550 (I think?). Manual for the 550 is here

I went to a local bike coop to pickup an A72 Shimano brake straddle cable and ended up buying another full set of brakes for $16 with cables. They wanted $3 for just the straddle cable which I also bought.

I'm pretty sure you've got a front mounted on the back of the bike or vice versa. Left is left and right is right.
