22.0 mm quill in a 22.2 mm steerer?

I recently received the quill stem adapter I ordered from Amazon and when installing it, found it went into the steerer really easily. Too easily actually, so I measured the quill and despite the Amazon ad listing it as a 22.2 mm quill, it measures 22.0 mm. Can I still use this or is it unsafe? It's a quill stem adapter with a wedge so if the wedge is sufficiently tight, what problems could arise?

There will be a little gap there (between stem and headset) and there'll be some play, but it'll be safe.

The clearance between the steerer ID and the stem quill's OD is not written in stone. Millions of cheap American bikes with a stamped and wrapped stem (think Wald) have a fit into the steerer that can be rather loose. Typically the usual concerns are keeping the wedge tight, UNLESS the rider is challenging the bike. Jumps, lots of strong upper body efforts and the classic lack of maintenance.

Of course any stem adapter or extender should be routinely checked for a secure grip on the steerer and stem and not be used for trick, competitive riding or stunts. Andy

If the bottom wedge directly contacts the steerer like one of these,

0.2 mm should be no problem. If it's the spreader kind, like this

there might be a problem.

Don't forget to grease the stem, wedge and bolt so they don't seize up over time.

If it makes you feel any better, I have a Nitto quill stem sitting here off an old Cannondale that measures 22.0mm (at spots, depends on the paint thickness, other places it is 22.1mm). I imagine that if I scraped off all the paint it would be even less than 22mm in some areas. It's part of why quill stems (can) creak.

Similar question: if a guy had access to a 21.1mm quill stem with the triangular type wedge...could he use that in a French steerer (22mm)? I have a French bike with a sanded-down 22.2mm quill stem, but I don't like how tight it is and have access to a 21.1mm stem that will work nicely if it'll be safe to use. If not by itself...maybe with some beer can shimming?
