That looks like a fabulous specimin ^, Werdigo 49! I don't see many low mileage SC's (for obvious reasons). More pics please.

I am sure "MK II" stands for "Mark Two" - The English had a thing for designating each successive design iteration "Mark I", "Mark II", and so on. To wit, England's famous 20th century service rifles:

Short Magazine Lee-Enfield Mk I
Short Magazine Lee-Enfield Mk II
Short Magazine Lee-Enfield Mk III/III*
Short Magazine Lee-Enfield Mk V etc etc

We are looking forward to seeing a real picture of your Super Course Mk II !

Thanks, auchencrow. Its attractiveness isn't my doing, though; I was just lucky to pick it off the consignment rack! (In fact, I just destroyed that plastic Simplex derailleur, as reported in another thread... ) Here's the only other photo I have. Can't figure out how to increase the size here, though.

Don't use the "link attachment" feature.
Post your pics to Photobucket, etc.
Capture the picture's URL.
After you click the "Reply" button you have to click the "Go Advanced" button.
Then click on the "Insert Image" button above the reply box.
Then put the pic's URL in the little box that pops up.

My SC-12 came with GT's, but I promptly tricked it out with Cyclone M-II's. They compliment the chrome faced drops nicely, and I barely even have to think of
touching the barcons, and the shift is done. ,,,,BD

It's hard to beat Cyclones, BD! Come to think of it, another "plus" of the SC is the fact that it has no DR hanger - so you can hang practically any DR you want, swap them out willy-nilly even, with just a claw. At the moment, mine are sporting:
-Suntour VxGT Luxe
-Huret Challenger
-Shimano Light Action (I actually have this on two machines)

These are all surprisingly good shifters. The LA is sort of "industrial strength", and to be candid, of all the Shimano DRs I've tried, it's the only one I really like.

Lots of work kevtjam, but well worth it!
New rubber and expendables along with a little OA, Scratch-X and Mother's, will make your bike ride and look like new.

It's all original! And the seat is in very good condition!

My advice:

Put toe clips on the pedals. Pedaling the undersides must hurt.

I agree that new tires make the most difference. Try Panaracer Paselas. You'll be amazed.

Also, you'll love Kool Stop brake shoes. They'll work better than Weinmann shoes ever worked, and your current old ones are not as good as when they were new.

If you want to go further:

Change the derailleurs, chain and freewheel.

That's it. The rest is good!

Yes, I did have toe clips back in the day. Thanks, will check out the tire, brake shoe and cosmetic recommendations when I have time.

I finished rehabbing this 1972 SC this morning. I went with mostly original components, but upgraded the mechs and shifters to Raleigh-branded SunTour, and the cottered steel crankset to cotterless Nervar. Weighs in at 26.3 lbs.

Bravo!

What made you decide to angle the rear derailleur that way? Normally, I set them up the way Suntour said to: parallel to the chainstay.

Nlerner: Love the bike, are those quick release stock? (I have an almost identical centurion lemans that I'm considering moving the wheelset over to quick release) Love that look on there.

Hmm, I just set it up how it seemed to want to go together, Tom! Perhaps I should adjust it? It seems to shift just fine.

About 26.3 lbs, which was lighter than I expected.

Those are Spidel QR skewers from the parts bin. Originally, it would have had some Maillard skewers, I'd guess, but I only had one of those in the parts bin. So I went with the French theme.

Thanks for the comments, all.

This bike has undergone another, more radical makeover since thie earlier photo's were taken. Behold the Super Course "pickup".

With the addition of the Xtracycle kit, some longer brake and rear derailler cables, and some trail tires.....this bike can do anything (except perhaps a fast group ride). I really enjoy it.

I've never weighed it, and I'm usually hauling something with it, but I'd have to guess about 35-40 lbs.
