I am sure "MK II" stands for "Mark Two" - The English had a thing for designating each successive design iteration "Mark I", "Mark II", and so on. To wit, England's famous 20th century service rifles:

Short Magazine Lee-Enfield Mk III/III*

Thanks, auchencrow. Its attractiveness isn't my doing, though; I was just lucky to pick it off the consignment rack! (In fact, I just destroyed that plastic Simplex derailleur, as reported in another thread... ) Here's the only other photo I have. Can't figure out how to increase the size here, though.

Don't use the "link attachment" feature.
Post your pics to Photobucket, etc.

These are all surprisingly good shifters. The LA is sort of "industrial strength", and to be candid, of all the Shimano DRs I've tried, it's the only one I really like.

It's all original! And the seat is in very good condition!
My advice:
Put toe clips on the pedals. Pedaling the undersides must hurt.
I agree that new tires make the most difference. Try Panaracer Paselas. You'll be amazed.
Also, you'll love Kool Stop brake shoes. They'll work better than Weinmann shoes ever worked, and your current old ones are not as good as when they were new.
If you want to go further:
Change the derailleurs, chain and freewheel.
That's it. The rest is good!

I finished rehabbing this 1972 SC this morning. I went with mostly original components, but upgraded the mechs and shifters to Raleigh-branded SunTour, and the cottered steel crankset to cotterless Nervar. Weighs in at 26.3 lbs.

What made you decide to angle the rear derailleur that way? Normally, I set them up the way Suntour said to: parallel to the chainstay.

Nlerner: Love the bike, are those quick release stock? (I have an almost identical centurion lemans that I'm considering moving the wheelset over to quick release) Love that look on there.

With the addition of the Xtracycle kit, some longer brake and rear derailler cables, and some trail tires.....this bike can do anything (except perhaps a fast group ride). I really enjoy it.
