Turn up the heat !

I've always enjoyed riding when the temps and humidity start to rise. So, with this little heat wave we've been having I've been in my happy place. I've had the trails to myself the last four days expect running into some kids fishing one day. I even found a nice little thigh burner climb that I've ridden past without knowing it was there. Always enjoy little surprises like that to add to the fun.

That looks pretty rugged to my eye! I hope you have some suspension.

I also don't mind the heat. I rode 18 miles yesterday (Maryland), temp was 97 degrees. Did 20 this AM, on the road, without much shade, so I started early. Storms had dropped the temps into the mid 70's, a huge change from the past two weeks.

In the 100* heat we have been having here in north Texas cycling is tough on me.
One of my meds is making me more sensitive to the sun and heat.
Would a long sleeve quick dry type shirt, like a fishing shirt, help?

It hit 103F in NJ yesterday but I got off at 99my 3 hour ride at 99F. I don't mind it but can't ride as hard and 2 bottles is barely enough on 3 hours.

My issue is sweat in my eyes, I still haven't figured that one out. I tried a skullcap, but I never determined if it made the sweat running down my face better or worse. I have to stop every 10 miles or so and wring the sweat from my helmet pads. Once my sunglasses get sweaty, I can never get them clean on the road. I did also just purchase cycling specific socks, on longer rides 40 miles+, my Walmart athletic socks get soaked.

I used to be more heat-resilient, especially, since Colorado is so much drier than the midwest where I spent the first half of my life.

But the last few years it seems to get easier to over-do it.

On the other hand, I do better in the cold each year.

Enjoy! (...but be safe.)

You might try a Halo headband, it has a silicone strip above the face which channels drips around to the back - it sits right against the skin. Only sweat starting below the band makes it on to your face. There was a thread about this topic here recently.

I don't have a lot of problems with sweat but I dump water on my helmet a lot and if not careful will get water in my face. If I look up when I dump the water and wear this Halo headband I get all the water on my head and shoulders/back only.

Along with dumping water on my head I have a 1l bladder bottle which I put in the freezer and then pop into a back jersey pocket before the ride. Also I use insulated water bottles with ice.

For $14, I'll give it a shot, thanks!

After three weeks of full sun and temps over 90 deg, the Halo headband was a success. On the first ride, it worked very well. It's a little fussy under the helmet but worth the effort

To reduce the seat-in-the-eyes impact, I wear a Halo cap under my helmet.

It was so hot last Saturday, we finished our ride in a swimming hole on the Mascoma River in NH. Delightful.

A friend of mine owns a local brewery that sponsors a group ride every Wednesday evening. I volunteered to help out and usually sweep the B-ride. This week I led the ride. 106 degrees at the start. I can’t believe how many people are dumb enough to ride in that kind of heat. Anyhow, no one died and we all had beer afterwards.

With so much of the country sweltering, I'm kind of embarrassed by the weather we have been having locally.

Almost the perfect cycling weather: cool in the mornings, warm but not hot in the afternoons. Not even any wildfire smoke. And of course, no rain.

But on the downside, my Garmin tells me my heat acclimation has now dropped to zero. Oh well, you can't have it all.

25 miles on the C&O Canal last night, but I paid the price for the cool weather those storms brought last weekend. The towpath was littered with debris, it was like going thru a battlefield. But, luckily all the downed trees had been cleared, so no climbing over them.

LS Fishing Shirts

That’s all I wear all Summer on the Bike. A Guy Harvey Bass Camo and an Aftco Dorado LS Shirt are my favorites.

I picked up another Halo headband to alternate them, they are still about 80% effective.

I also bought two, very light, sleeveless triathalon jerseys for the hot weather.

Try a head band to avoid sweat running in your eyes.
Never use sunscreen on your forehead it'll sting like hell when it runs in your eyes.
Carry a small pack of tissues to clean your glasses

On long rides, when I stop, I use my finger to run across the front pad of my Kask Rapido helmet, the sweat just runs out.
The pad has rather thin "wings" on each side - one the adhesive let go this summer.
I thought after two seasons, that perhaps the pads should just be replaced. I was surprised to find the pad replacement cost $25 (helmet was $100).
I bit the bullet, but the new pad isn't any better
Is there an alternate solution? How long do your helmet pads last?
