Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Great post of your first ride.

Just be careful of one thing - the forum uses an auto word filter to remove our everyday cuss words, so please don’t alter the spelling to avoid the filter, like “sh*t” for example. Just type the word correctly, if you must, and the filter will replace it with ****. Everybody will know exactly what you’re saying anyway when they see an expression like “Oh ****”.

Thanks for the post. Rather than boring the "serious" cyclists, this sort of stuff reminds us of the fact that cycling is, and should always be, fun.

When asked why I never did triathlons, I would reply:

1: Running is what you do to get away from a mugger with a knife
2. Swimming is what you do to keep from drowning.

By spreading my lack of talent across three sports, I can achieve the most minor of glory by beating cubicle dads whose doctors told them they needed some exercise.

The swimming also keeps us from looking so scrawny.

I'm offended.

But seriously, nice post – and welcome to the best sport in the world.

Oh, and kindly remove the reflectors from the spokes of that otherwise beautiful bike.

Nice bike, but needs a drive side shot. Garage door optional...

This summer I was squatting 315 lbs (3 sets of 8 reps) and deadlifting 435 (1 set of 8). Those numbers really aren't very impressive at all, those are lifts that use a lot of muscle. For my size they're a little low. I was renegade rowing 75 lbs which I was happy with.

Then I was in an accident, and badly messed up a pair of tendons that run through the foot and ankle. My podiatrist says I can squat and DL, but I don't want to risk setting myself back. So these days I just do things I can sit or lay for, like bench press, overhead press, flys, etc.

I think this stuff helps me somewhat on the bike, more on skis. But it for sure helps me look better.

You will also get some pretty good feels when you will break your own personnal records, objectives, etc. I you caught ''the bug'', bicycling will become your new drug (and it is a great one to keep you away from alcohol!).

As long as you stay safe on the roads & that your bike is properly fitted, you have plenty of rides ahead of you. Keep us apprised on your improvements.

EDIT: Here's a picture of my first ride with my old bike (Giant Defy Advanced) up to the highest point of the national park (45km run with over 700m (2300ft) of total elevation) close to where I live. It was my longest and hardest run, and I remember that beautiful feeling of accomplishment! It was the beginning of my addiction.
