Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lucas the Prince of Darkness.

Years ago i met a guy that drove a Jaguar XK120 daily. When i asked if it was dependable, he raised the "bonnet" and I saw a AC Delco alternator and it was rewired and converted to 12v.

It seems there are pro cyclists that still prefer mechanical groupsets. Maybe they're too poor to buy electronic too...

You obviously care very deeply. Otherwise, why are you still here arguing with all of these happy Di2 users?

This is the interwebz... arguing is what we do. And the most trivial the topic the more heated it becomes.

"Edison invented the Electric Light. Lucas invented the Electric Dark"

Hey, now! My MGB was 12 volt! Positive ground, sure, but at least it was 12v!

One is tempted to respond to this with "Yeah? Can you PROVE THAT?!?", just to be an a**.

Italian cars of that era were no better. I had a roommate with a Fiat X19 where the hidden headlights constantly blew a fuse and retracted.

I've never been on a bike with electronic shifting although I have a few friends that have it. All I have ever known is mechanical shifting. When the shifting became integrated with the brakes I thought that was the coolest thing ever. I keep my bikes in good shape so I haven't had any problems with mechanical shifting. It works well for me.

Back in the 60's and early 70's, my dad was an engineer with Pratt Whitney at NASA. His off time hobby, was rebuilding and manufacturing parts for MG's. He bought some land west of town that used to be a farm that had a huge barn that he converted to a machine shop. He had 10 to 15 non running MGA\MGB's that he would use for parts or use as models so he could machine his own parts if he could not use them. The pride of his car stock in the "MG barn" as it was known, was a 1954 MG TF in British racing green. Loved that car more than life or his family as we found out. His machine shop work building parts became so well know in the area, he made enough money for him to rebuild the MG TF to like new condition. He even built a paint shed to do the painting.

I seriously think working on those cars made him go insane as he was such a perfectionist as most engineers are, that he would complain that whoever design this, that, or the other thing were stupid and should be shot for creating something that would always fail. After he redesigned several parts, he sent letters to MG with the designs. They paid him for several of them if I recall as a couple of them were safety related.

After a while, my mom was tired of the "MG Barn" and he ended up selling it for some obscene amount of money, divorced my mom, and took his MG T to Texas, never to be seen again.

Even though its a crappy ending, to this day, I have a thing for MG's.

SRAM sucks, and if you don't believe that, google the Polish translation of SRAM.

That reminds me of my first visit to the Czech Republic. Was driving around in a Skoda, which — before the fall of communism – had been the national automaker. I asked someone about the origin of the name, and was told that it was an old family name. But also that the name roughly translated into “shame.“ Made sense, given the car I was driving.

I believe Skoda got bought out by Opel, and the quality rose a bit. The one I drove was basically a communist-era, Eastern European copy of an early '70s Fiat-- so, in other words, an inferior copy of a cheap nasty car.

I have Sram Force 11 and Shimano Ultegra 11 on my race and "daily driver" road bikes, respectively. The Sram stuff sucks in comparison. It's light and nifty, but has more problems and I don't like the feel. I felt the same way about Sram v Shimano in the 10 speed days too.

I'm going to Sram Etap Aero 11 on my TT bike, but I don't think that's going to be an even comparison with what I'm used to riding. It's Shimano mechanical 11 currently.

If it sucks then why get it on another bike.

Unless you just like to complain.

30,000+ trouble free miles on Sram. Rival 10, Rival CX1, Red 22 and Red eTap. I've also ridden a little Shimano and don't plan on switching. But to each their own.

IDK I do think Sram is kinda nifty and somehow more fitting (for me) on a race bike. I like that it's light and that you can pull the shifter paddle closer while in the drops. Helps w my small hands. Plus it just kinda feels racey.

But it mostly just pisses me off. It feels tacky and requires more adjustment over a big period of miles, but YMMV.

Really the whole bike just pisses me off. 2016 Venge expert w Sram Force 11. But its got all the fast bits on it and the price was right (ex team bike). My daily is a 2013 Giant TCR advanced ISP w Ultegra 11 and box rims. Superior in every way except maybe holding speed when its fast, but that's not a critical factor for me when training on anything but my TT bike.

Also yes it is fun to complain

didn’t you have to replace a Rival shift lever?

That doesn’t sound trouble free to me.
