Electronic Shifting - What's the Point?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I was about to say I can't believe this is still going on, but upon reflection, it's not only believable but actually inevitable. All this fuss over something you have the option not to buy.

Electronic shifting is such a wonderful twofer - you get to kvetch about the tech that you don't understand and the price that you don't find palatable.

It's amazing the lengths that some people will go to in order to justify their aversion to new technology.

Of course anyone with an IQ over 40 can drive a GTR, an old school 6 speed Porsche with absolutely no electronic nannies takes skill.

It is the same with bikes. Electronic shifting is cool as hell, but it is a step away from pure biking. I would ride one, I would just never spend any money on one.
Having multiple gears is a step away from pure biking too, but so worth it. Even though I'm relying on this bizarre little machine invented by the French using cables and springs. Hell, I'm relying on a container ship to bring the parts I rely on other people to manufacture. I'm not sure where the line is for purity, but using my finger to tell the bike to shift using mech vs Di2 doesn't feel like much different to me.

Now those ebike people, they're on the wrong side of the line for sure. 🙂

Since I traded this in towards my Di2 bike, I guess I'm no longer a "pure biker":

Absolutely correct.

In my area we call those people “Tools”. I’m not sure what we are allowed to call them on the forum.

It does have a geared hub but, alas, no Di2. The expense of the Rohloff should partially make up for it, though.

So it has nothing to do with the title of this topic.

Got it.

It was in comparison to his GT3.

He started it.
