I took it out this morning. On Gatorskins and an un-oiled chain. And did my fastest time on that route. The initial prognosis is that it has leapfrogged three places and now sits at the top of the desireability platform. But I'll give it a few more rides first. I can't figure out why it was such a dog the last/first time I rode it, a couple years ago. I have to say I'm leaning in the direction of the atrocious paint scheme as being the culprit.
And the idea of outfitting it with the dynamo hub has been put on hold. I fully expected this to be the least desireable of the bunch. Is it possible that the 79 Trek 930 could now fill that role? The 414 is the obvious choice, but it is the gravel bike and would be too hard on the system, I think.

Here’s what I’m thinking

Trying to shoestring this rig. The 58 is measuring like it will be a great fit. I’d like a casual donut/coffee rig that has potential to rip a bit but I’m ok with it not being a personal record rig. Can always change my mind later.

thinking 1x7 44t or 46t crank with a 11-34 7 speed cassette. I think range will be plenty as I rarely shift to the smaller cog on my 50/34 x 11-32 11 speed. 46x11 is pretty fast gearing really. I cut my teeth on a 7speed with a 50/34 crank. Honestly I find the 11 speed gear spacing annoyingly tight (11-12-13-14-16-18-20-22-25-28-32). I kinda miss experiencing real change in gearing when I shift.

Will I be able to operate a modern 7sp RD, say a shimano tourney, if I get the original 6207 friction downtube shifter? I’m feeling that sticking with the 6207 helps with the threading and boss issue. I don’t have a RD currently but if there’s a better cheap answer than a new 7sp I’m all for it.

Used Deore RDs that would match are going for $25-40 on the Bay. I don't know how much a new one costs.

shimano 6/7 speed for $20-30 new.

Many deore are >7 sp…are you meaning to suggest more gears?

7 speed Deore. Go to the Bay and search Deore RD. An option for how many speeds will pop up. Put in what you want and go from there. I might have a 600 long cage friction RD in my stash. I'll look tomorrow.

Ok I’m there. Deore because it’s a long cage? Any reason I’d not use a brand new shimano for half the price? Works with 11-34 range that I have in mind. The 600 RD I have is not a long cage. If that RD works with an older derailleur hanger, you should be good to go.

Your idea for build mirrors my '84 Centurion Comp TA. The frame was a gift from RT. The parts were mostly from my '85 Ironman but the RD was a Shimano deore.

So I may go to a 39×34 as the lowest gear.
When RT gifted me this frame he said he's had all the years Ironman just like me and said I needed the Pre-Ironman.
I had all the parts for this build except 10 dollar chain, 13 dollar stem, 50 dollars for tires.
On to pictures.

Kinda cloudy need more Sun.

42 tooth biopace. It's a 1×7 , the FD is just to help keep chain on when shifting.

30 tooth Cassette on wheels that can only take 7 cogs. I think the RD will shift up to a 39 tooth and possibly a 10 speed. But I'd need newer wheels.

It's like you read my mind. That's exactly what I was planning for Black Friday!

I'm a little overweight, but it doesn't bother me - a waist is a terrible thing to mind.

Is it a 650B conversion ?

How to kill 0 birds with $31

Well I’ve been patiently searching for a set of 6207 shifters that match my B style bosses. For $31 I thought I found one and I was excited to be getting a solution for the boss cover and shifter I needed. Bamboozled! I see where I went wrong.

with this 6207 M5 braze on set in-hand though? What should I do? Can probably resell on eBay and get my $31 back and go back to the drawing board. Or I could keep it and hack up the boss covers to work and alter some threads (time and money and possible ruin).

really just looking for a right side shifting solution for a 1x7 build. Alternative ideas?

How does the chain fall off on shifting on this 1x7? I have read that in other cases. I run a 1x6 on an old super sport with no problems, and millions of 5 speeds, along with current low end 6 and 7 speeds are fine too. What am I missing?

Would these work? I’m confused by the comment in the description about M5 screw.

seller has clarified that screw is m4.5. Think I’m gonna do it. Not worried about this being non-original to the ironman

Would one of you kind souls confirm that I am not repeating a mistake? Cheers!

I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving.

It's amazing how much equipment decisions can hold up a build. I finally decided on a color of handlebar tape for the Prestige.............that I bought in June. It would have been done by August if I had taken that bike to HotterNHell. Now I have to decide on keeping it close to original or making it a rider. If it's to be a rider, I have to get lower gearing. So, I'm gonna have to replace the 7400 DA RD, or crank, or both. I have a FC-6206 600 110/74 crank I could put on as a triple or compact double. If I did that I could keep the 7400 RD with a 26.(maybe a 28 with a Wolflink extender) The 600 crank is just as pretty. Maybe not quite as shiny, but close. I think that's what I'll do. As people know, I don't care for DT shifters. I have L600 first gen DA barcons that could go on.

Or maybe I'll keep it all/ mostly original and avoid hilly routes. My other bikes have 52/42 rings.(and a granny) I know most of the places I can get by without the granny. I'll think about it some more.
At least I got the handlebar tape ordered.

Edit: After reading up on DA 7400 shifting compatibility options, it will most likely be original including the indexed shifters. It appears the 7400 group is a stand alone/orphan group.

Pat- You can use a Triplizer and wind up with a 39 middle and 30 inner gear.
Pretty sure the stock 7400 FD will shift a triple of that size (at least it shifted a 48/28 for me in Wisconsin). if not a 6207 will do the trick and look proper.
That RD should happily shift up to a 28, possibly a 30 depending on RD hanger length.

Thanks for the info. The main issue is what kind of shifters/shifting with the RD. It appears to be original DT shifters or friction. I'll play around with alternative cable routings, etc. and see if I can make something else work.

This is the approach I've settled on with my C&V bikes. I take a little liberty with the rear clusters, so that they all have a 26t cog, and for one bike that came with a 52/43 I swapped the latter for a 39, but with that gearing I can do all the rides I do that don't involve half an hour of climbing. Which is fine, because the half hour climb means a 10 minute descent which I'd rather not do with C&V brakes, even with modern pads.

EDIT: I looked long and hard for a 130mm BCD Biopace chainring smaller than 42, because I have TWO bikes with Biopace chainrings now, both with 52/42, but apparently Shimano in its infinite wisdom never made such.

Sakae(Ovaltech) and Sugino(Cycloid) made oval chainrings. I think mostly in 110, though. You can usually find some of them sitting on the dock of Ebay watching the tide roll away.

Pat- That’s what I did on my 78 Richard Sachs: used a mid 80’s Shimano triple as a compact double…although got mine polished and pantographed as a DA.
Works great with the 7400 RD and shifters, but in your case would be tempted to use friction bar ends.
