The old bolts are too long, or maybe it's the nut is too long. I ordered a set for a single chainring, hoping they will be the right length.

What's special about your chainring bolts?

Problem Solvers has a line of bolts. I think they size them by the dimension between the shoulders of the nut and bolt. 5mm up to 12mm.
I read the page and it says they are sized by the length of usable thread. They have a place to ask questions.

The ones on order are threaded through, so the bolt can't bottom out:
UPDATE: Success! Ready for its first ride.
FSA cranks, SRAM chainrings, some no-name chainring bolts

My main rides are My Bike and My Rain Bike, also known as My Spare Bike. The most frustrating part of bike maintenance happens after I need to do something to My Bike (right now, rebuild a pedal and the right Ergo shifter). Rather than waste a good Saturday morning, since it's good riding weather, I'll ride the Spare Bike. I know that, at some point, something's going to wear out on the Spare Bike, and then I'll have a perfect riding day -- sunny, light breezes, 65F in the morning warming up to just over 80F -- and instead of riding a bike, I'll have to spend the morning fixing both of them up before She Who Must Be Obeyed has something to do in the afternoon.
That's frustrating!
Why don't I wear stuff out in the middle of November or February when I'm looking for an excuse to stay off the bike and in the warm, dry house??!

Dropping a tiny piece of a component you are working on, having it roll across the garage floor, never to be seen again.

Wrapping my road bike handlebars always causes me anxiety. I’m a perfectionist and cannot stand it when the overlap pattern is not consistent, or when there is a loose or crooked spot anywhere. I understand the concepts involved, and I am capable of getting it right when I take my time. Still, I hate doing this task.

The ones I hate are the ones that bounce, you see the bounce, and may even see a second bounce but they disappear. And the more irreplaceable the part, the more likely it is to disappear. I think they are dropping down tiny wormholes and filling a nearby universe with bicycle parts.

my least favorite thing is cleaning and maintaining the bikes I ride on the cinder rail trails. That crunchy stuff does a number on the drivetrain quickly. It's part of the reason I'm a roadie at heart. Offroad maintenance I do not like.
