Just finished my sister's new ride.

1980 motobecane super touring with index shifting from a trek 730. Fenders, dynamo lights and a rack. She loves getting around town on her bike.

Well that wasn't too bad. After pulling the rest of the posthead off, I used my big bolt cutters to cut a couple stress risers into post. If they had small jaws, I'd have gone ahead and cut slots. Or if I wasn't feeling lazy I'd have cut slots, but flattening a seatpost is pretty easy either way when you have a nice big bench vise and a long enough cheater. Once I had it flattened out enough to hold fast, I was able to twist the frame free.

Another happy cyclist! It feels good to do something for someone , relative or not. I think when I overhauled my mailman's Schwinn LeTour , I got such a thrill when he saw it . Then , when he texted me after his first ride , I knew the energy was put in the right place. He wanted to know how much it would cost to rebuild it after seeing my collection and I said " just ride the bike!"

The bar tape arrived for the Miyata 912 yesterday. All ready for the ride to work tomorrow. Now I just need to mix up some touch up paint. The color is really hard to match. It’s not quite black, and in some light it has a green/blue cast to it.

Stiff thanks to that Spline Triple Butted tubing. Before they made bikes, they made rifle barrels.

It's so fun when you give someone something that momentarily changes their behavior. Feels wonderful.

Well Friday night ( or was it Thursday?) I helped out the guy that bought my Klein Quantum II. He was trying to commute in town with the racing oriented tubular setup on the bike. I never ride in town but I guess the roads are bad compared to what I deal with. Anyway, I sell local only and don't like a buyer not being happy with one of my bikes. So I gave him a spare set of wheels I had floating around with some Gatorskin Hardshells I had taken off of something. Dug into the parts stash and was able to find some regular pads for his brake holders too. The tubular wheels were Reynolds C.F. ones so the pads had to be swapped. So we swapped over the cassette, pads and wheels, adjusted the brakes and he was good to go. Now he's got a commuting set of wheels and a race set of tubulars for spirited riding. Gotta keep my buyers happy, it ain't about the money.

Then Saturday I got caught out in the pouring rain while on my beautiful Coppi. Freaking weathermen totally lied yet again. 12 miles of pouring rain had the bike covered with fine grit, so much for a clean drivetrain. So I put 'er up on the stand and did a partial teardown and deep clean to get all the grit off. I have a wet weather bike so I hate it when one of my good rides get's messed up like this. Luckily I was Mavic wheels with a metal brake track for the otherwise carbon wheels. Although the Veloflex Corsa Race tires slipped on me several times as I was racing back in the wet.

I've been out of circulation these last few weeks, with highs and lows. Two Sundays back my daughter married the fellow she's been with for some 6 years - definitely a high! The next day I tested positive and spent a week mostly sleeping. I started creeping back into the world last week although I didn't test negative until Thursday. So no riding yet, but wrenching always makes me feel good so I put some bursts of energy into finishing a summer-long project of stripping my Falcon for a repaint (the first and possibly last time I'll do this). I'm in the home stretch, getting down to the last stubborn little bits. Thankfully the fork is full chrome. I've decided to take on the finishing using spray.bike products for priming and painting and a 2K gloss clear coat. Transfers are on the way from Cyclomondo. Pray for me.

Glad you are feeling better. Chemical or friendly chemical stripper?

Powder, OPP or rattle can?

Thanks. Bit by bit. I wasn't too bad but my energy was sapped and I have a lingering upper respiratory...something. Glad to have my taste and smell back.

I used Citri-Strip for the bulk removal. Detail work has been a combination of plastic stripping pads, dremel brushes and sanding. I'm going to use spray.bike for the primer and colo(u)r(way).
This one looks reasonably close to the classic Falcon baby blue:

I'll apply the transfers and then give it a 2k gloss top coat or two.

I am almost a month out and I am still dealing with brain fog and fatigue. I had three days of hell (pain everywhere), then basically a cold.

That’s what I get for letting my guard down. Hopefully you start breathing easier and get some energy back.

Congrats on the wedding.

As for the Falcon, looks ready to be given some clothing! Color looks perfect.

I will be interested to see how 2k does over the spray.bike powder stuff.

It's my birthday and I spent much of it getting a couple of tannoy dual concentric drivers working nicely in some ancient Heathkit cabinets. Gerry mulligan and Ben Webster on verve. The amplifier is an early 70s pioneer sa700. Turntable dual 1019 with Shure m91. All of this stuff was got into working order by yours truely. Not saying I am great at it but it is satisfying.

Thanks, Dave. I’d love to put those calipers on this build but I think I need more reach.

A belated happy b'day. I am a bit jealous of your sound system. I have not had a really good one in a long time. Just in the past couple of years, I have had times when I missed having one, and the 400+ albums I once had. My car does have a nice Bose system, but, nothing like LP's and a good sound system in the comfort of ones home.

I'm looking for an old Panasonic to build/restore. I don't know why. I have too many road bikes. But hopefully that's what I'll be wrenching on this winter.

I’ve had yet another major surgery on my scalp that’ll keep me off the road for the rest of the year. If I can’t ride them, I can at least work on them. I have a couple on long term projects just based on difficulty of finding parts (1940s), and one I picked up recently just to stay busy.

Long term projects are my 1947 Ciclo Piave that a PO modernized in the 80s. At least he left the Cambio Corsa alone.

Then there’s my 1989 Vitus 979 that I’m swapping the Shimano components for Mavic. (No, the saddle is not at ride height. It was stuck in this position when obtained. It has since been removed)

My current project is a 1985 Peugeot PGN-10 that I picked up just to stay busy. I’ll keep this one bone stock to see how everything performs.

And my most recent project is a 1985 Centurion Dave Scott Ironman that I picked up to refurbish for my brother-in-law. I built an entry level Puch Pathfinder for him when he started riding 2 years ago. Now he wants an upgrade. This should do nicely.

Still working on my theft recovery minivelo project. Labor day sales brought the cheapest good tires ($10/pc) to finish the running gear. The hubs are shimano rm30 procured from ebay for $4 and $8 respectively and the rims were a discount cart filler from CRC at $11/pc. I rehung all the (still dirty) original parts, save a cassette and rotors. Once it's ridable, I'll start with the "Fred" accessories. It's getting a headtube mounted basket and some sort of rear rack. And fenders. Maybe recycled campaign sign corroplast ones to really ramp up the uglyness. and then it'll probably be stolen again because Tacoma

Just minor stuff today. First off did some final dialing in of the derailleurs on the 85 Bianchi. I also put a new chain on it. Planning to take this one out again tomorrow.

Earlier this week I also went over this one with a better polish too and really kicked up the shine even more. Paint still has some marks and wear but she's sparkling in the sun pretty good now.

Then I just mounted some new Conti 5000s tires on a new set of Campagnolo Zonda's, using latex tubes of course. I want to try these on the 96 Calfee Tetro Pro to see if they finally make it feel alive under me. I've been trying to get this bike to feel alive under me all year.
