Sugino 170 vs 171?
Came across a Sugino DS crank today and now I have what I thought was a matched set. But a second look shows that the DS is labeled 171 and the off side is 170. Did Sugino really make cranks in 170 and 171 mm lengths at different times or did they at some point just start calling their 171 a 170 to go along with everyone else?

yes, both made
171 earlier
used because it is a fractional equivalent (British influence)

Yes, as @juvela notes, 171mm is 6-3/4", a standard British crank arm length.

+1, boom and pre-boom era Japanese crankarms were often labelled with the metric equivalent of the imperial size, rounded to the nearest millimetre. Common sizes included 165mm (6-1/2"), 168mm (6-5/8"), 171mm (6-3/4") and 175 mm (6-7/8"). The practice seems to have been phased out in the late 1970s, as new models/versions were introduced.

Thanks. So it looks like I now have DS crank that is a few sheets of copy paper longer than the NDS crank. That's not worth worrying about. However the M14 stamp on the crank is. That appears to be French thread. No wonder the crank was in a free box.

Easy retap if you want it English. Kinda cool though if you run across some French pedals.

Install one English pedal and one French pedal. Your bicycle will be bilingual.
