Replacement for FH-7700 Freehub-Body - any ideas?

Replacement for FH-7700 Freehub-Body - any ideas?
Hello everyone,
a long time bikeforums-reader has his first (but even more desperate) question (serached the forum exensivly for an concrete answer but didnt found one - if i missed it, just tell me an ill del the unnecessary post)
I need to replace the broken FH-7700 freewheel body (Shimano Code 3a0 9801) . I already tried to use a Shimano 105er FW-5500 Freehub Body it didnt work. From my understanding (by reading an older post by 70sSanO) the depth of the hub to the freehub flange is the crucial determining factor. I read in some posts that people used old Ultegra Bodys but nobody got specific. According to my knowledge the Ultegra 6400, 6500 and the 6800er-series - used a shallower freehub body than my 7700 freehub. I found nothing about the Fw-6700 yet.
Wrote emails to several bike shops and went to a few - nobody had a clue about this nerdy matter.
Has anybody ANY idea?
I am also ready for MTB - Solutions(XTR?!) or sth completly out of the box.

My 7700 freehub developed a drag causing the cassette to rotate with the wheel when coasting. Not good! That was many years ago. I also went on a quest to find a replacement other than the titanium freehub. I received lots of questionable advice about things that could possibly work. Eventually I ended up buying the cheapest 7700 hub I could find on e bay and swapped out the old freehub. Probably not the answer you are looking for. I hope someone chimes in with an alternate solution.

Yeah, I alredy thought about this as way out ...but thats at least 120 Euro - i guess then i would switch to a 2nd wheelset. but it would be so great to reuse with the old parts enstead of buy new stuff ( - i m renovating my merckx super corsa 7-11 w complete DA 740X/ 7700) an d I LOVE the 7700 Hubs.

Yeah you are right - but a replacment freewheel would be a more elegant (and cheaper) solution.But yes - when this is the only solution i ll have to do it (or buy sth like a 2nd hand mavic cosmic wheelset for the same money...) Dunno. I would love to reuse and repair old parts without spending too much money.

Have you tried disassembling the DA freehub? Could just need some new bearings and/or lube. Sometimes a good flush and lube can solve some problems. Good generic Shimano FH videos here.

I attempted to rebuild the freehub as shown in the posted video. I however could not get it apart. It required skills or tools I do not have.
The positive is I also have plenty of other 7700 hub parts if needed in the future.

Why not just get a entirely new rear hub with freewheel and have a local shop rebuild the wheel with it? Or do it yourself if you are familiar with building wheels.
Entire hubs aren't that expensive.

The one hub I haven't got in my backup arsenal is the FH-7700. One of these days I'll just pay what I need and get one, that I most likely will never use. I think I'll first go into an LBS and check out what a new Dura Ace equipped bike goes for and the the $200+ or more for a hub to sit on the shelf won't hurt so much. Used hubs are a real crap shoot. But if it looks nice enough and the seller feedback is good enough.
I wish I had more extensive knowledge of exactly what works, but 25 years years ago I was still using 7400 and a freewheel. And these days I have a tough time remembering what I did 5 years ago.
I've never been a big fan of titanium freehub bodies; and you only gain about 15-20 grams. I swapped out my M950 freehub body with a Sora FH-3300 and packed the original one away. I'm pretty certain that you can use an M950 body on a 7700. The one caveat is to ALWAYS buy a complete hub since cones and dust seals might be different. Therefore since a FH-3300 fits an M950 which should fit a 7700, you could probably use a FH-3300 until you decide what to do. Grease and care in adjusting cones are your friend.

I looked up the FH-3300 freehub body and the number is Y32X98040. It is also used on the WH-R540, FH-4400.
Interestingly that it is the same freehub body that is used on the FH-5500 which you said did not fit. What didn't fit?

One last thing, “generally” you can transfer the dust seal, washer/spacer, and locknut over.
It is best to measure the from the outer locknut surface of the original hub to the edge of the freehub body. It is around 5mm, give or take some.
For the 7700, you might have to swap the washer/spacer if you want to use the nicer locknut to get the same OLD. This is just the stuff that sometimes needs to be done with a mix-n-match.

Thanks for the thoughts and for the reply! I treid exactly this 105er FH body and the problem is that the depth of the hub to the freehub flange ist too small :-(

I’ll pull out my 7700 and M950 freehub bodies and compare them. I thought they have the same thick flange style. IIRC there were no issues putting the 3300 body on the M950 hub. I have another 3300, so worst case, I can pull that one apart.

Have you confirmed that the new freehub body that you are trying to use is the same part number that others have mentioned?
When you have enough post, please post a picture of what you have. Think that the 5500 should look similar to the attached 6500.
The Tiagra FH-4500 has a shallower depth and uses a more common Shimano body.

Since I put a Sora 3300 (same as 105-5500) freehub body on an M950 hub I measured the M950 body and the 7700 body and they were the same (within .2mm/.008").
Rather than remove the freehub body from the Sora 3300 (which is more of a pain when unlaced), I decided to put a 7700 freehub body on a Sora 3300 hub. The distance from the flange edge to the end of the freehub body was identical (37.7mm).
Here is a pic of an original Sora 3300 hub and a Sora 3300 hub with a titanium 7700 freehub body. While I can't verify this, I think this may be the only picture in existence of a Sora 3300 hub with a 7700 body.

That certainly makes the reverse look promising! Like I expressed earlier in this thread, I was looking for advice on doing this many years ago. Many folks said it could be done but know one could show me they had actually done it. I ended up replacing my 7700 freehub with another 7700.
