I would never cross chain (ie 46/30 or 30/11) and pretty sure the synchro wouldn’t allow that anyway (like you said).

Well you won't suddenly blow up and leave a crater big enough for a army tank to fall in if you do happen to. I use to cross chain all the time in the big/big.

However nothing here was about cross chaining. It was about finding the correct size rings that will work with your existing rear DR and whether you'd be able to size the chain properly and not have too much or not enough slack in it.

You can non-syncro shift into the big/big. If the chain is short because you're over capacity it can destroy a carbon frame.
