Some years ago a friend moved to another state. A lifelong runner, she switched to cycling and her husband bought her a lower end mountain bike. She rides dirt roads and loves it but a couple years ago she decided her bike wasn't good enough so she asked me to help her decide on what to replace it with. Of course, this turned into a fiasco as I tried to help her make an informed choice. She had it in her mind she needed a carbon fiber full suspension bike so I tried to steer her toward a Juliana short travel bike. I really thought a gravel bike was the best choice for what she does, a bit of road and mostly fire roads, but I couldn't get that across.
This went back and forth until she sent me a link to an ad for an old Giant 26er with the weird rear suspension. I told her not to buy it. Too old, outdated tech, and it won't be light, even though it's crabon. She wrote back that she already had it. Oookay. Enjoy.
Yesterday she let me know she wants another bike. The one she bought is hard to get parts for, even tires, and people where she lives don't know how to work on it and her husband is tired of messing with it. Again I try to help her decide what would work for her and today she linked me an ad for an enduro bike. Ffs. A light hardtail or gravel bike or XC bike, maybe. Not an enduro bike. I want to give up.

...or something like that. It would depend a lot on your level of friendship.

The expensive and the inexpensive shifter systems on my bikes all work fine.

There's still plenty of good 26er tyres out there. For XC/gravel these are pretty good:
