What is the relevance of any of this? No one cares what cars your friends buy or how much they spend. (P.S. That's how it should be.)

Does friend #3 always sell his used cars for more than he paid? Regardless of new or used, unless it has some sort of value as a collectable, cars depreciate due to the wear and tear of use.
I always enjoyed driving a Porsche. Better to lease a new one though.

A person does not need my approval to buy a $14,000 bicycle no more than if he throws his money into the river.

I have never known friend #3 to lose money on his collectible cars. I know that he has made a lot of money on the sale of some of them. He drives a very nice high mileage crew cab truck that he uses to haul his car trailer.

Why is it so hard for you to understand that bicycles are not equivalent to collectible cars? Are you really that [censored by moderators]

Bicycles are just another way to spend discretionary income. Except for those who (like myself when I was in high school and college), rely on them for transportation, bicycles are another hobby, not much different than, watches, cars, airplanes, and rare coins.

Hell, the vast majority of cars are not equivalent to collectible cars.

Frigging classic examples of wasting assets.

I really doubt that anybody considering buying a $14,000 bike can be talked out of it. It's like someone who has decided to buy a Corvette.

As far as depreciation, all new bikes depreciate very quickly. Just ask any shop owner who is trying to sell one of last year's models.

If your hobby is collecting rare/vintage bicycles, yes. If you look at bicycles as sporting equipment, not so much. Thankfully, bicycles last longer than the $400 softball bats I used to buy for my daughter about once a year.

I don't know why anyone would care how he or you or I value our bikes. It's a completely pointless discussion, except to denigrate each other's choices.

Bingo! Not to mention that nowadays, just about every smartphone takes excellent quality photos.

Back in the early 1990's, I knew a guy who took excellent photos with a cheap Vivitar point and shoot camera.

The obvious question is, of course, why do you keep comparing them to collectible cars, real estate, watch collecting, etc.?

I would suspect that photography is one of those things that high-end gear in the hands of a highly-skilled user will get an improvement in results that is only recognized by those with a similar level of skill.

Agreed. Bicycles are one of those things that I don't ever buy with the intention of selling. As such, things like leaving the steerer tube sticking up above the top of the stem for "the next guy" is not a consideration. My bikes, optimized for me.

It wouldn't take a highly-skilled user to quickly realize that a smart phone could not match an SLR with a 300/2.8 or larger lens.

Maybe, but I'm the guy who has no idea what 300/2.8 means other than it's a camera lens - LOL

I pulled up at a stoplight yesterday next to an antique RR like the ones in the Grey Poupon commercial. I guess that's revelant to the thread somehow?
