Addiction 2023.1

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You can and I do - you just don’t run it through the automatic washes at dealerships (or any others for that matter) because the soaps and waxes they use eat at the ceramic coating. In the winter, I’ll run my car through the local touchless wash with a rinse only. The rest of the year I wash the car by hand.

Not so. Kentucky has historically had the most noteworthy and largest distillers, but bourbon can be made anywhere. And it is.

Thanks for the clarification. I do enjoy a good bourbon…and rye…and many other whiskeys. Scotch, not nearly as much. The Japanese whiskeys I’ve had have been quite good.

This is so sad to hear, I hope you'll continue to post updates. I'm not here much anymore and just learned of his current problems yesterday. Indy is such an inspiration in Touring and his forum contribution is exemplary. Fingers crossed, thoughts and prayers.

Will give updates on Indy when I hear. Realize the info chain goes through my friend (who knows Indy but has not seen him in several years) to another friend of Indy’s. So I don’t expect very frequent updates.

I am friendly with some of the cardiothoracic surgeons in the Penn Medicine system, but I can’t really ask them for info because of HIPAA/patient confidentiality.

When I was 16, Coke and Sprite were still available in quart glass bottles and they gave us 30¢ return for those. Camels were 65¢ by then though, so I had to find two quart bottles and a 12 oz bottle to trade in for smokes.

I remember when cigs were 35 cents in cigarette machines, remember those? That's how we got them much of the time. Or we would ask one of the older guys to buy them for us at the store.

I was pissed when they went up to 50 cents in the machines. I lived across the street from a small hospital and medical center and there were cigarette machines in those buildings. When I was 15 I got my first real job as a dishwasher at the hospital. When they put new carpet in the building the administrator called a meeting and told employees we were no longer allowed to smoke in the carpeted areas. How dare he infringe on our rights?

Prior to that we smoked everywhere, even patient rooms. When my friend crashed his car and was in a coma I used to sit with his dad in his room and we chain smoked the whole time.

Thank God those smoking days are over. I smoked for 43 years, starting in high school. Probably my greatest life achievement was giving that addiction up. Now I have some pals who like to enjoy some bourbon at cigar bars . . . . I say HELL no, I'm not going back down that road again, I'm thankful and blessed that my lungs are in good shape.
