Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

991 4S.

I like the, less efficient, three pedal cars though.

Is a stick-shift with a clutch anachronistic now?

The Saturn still rolls with one.

Early one then, perhaps a '12 or '13. Not long after that car, they started to install the much better GT Sport wheel.

When I was first shopping for a 911, I swore it would be manual only. Then I drove (and bought) a PDK equipped car, and never looked back.

There are fewer available in the new car market every year. Sad.

Ferrari has not offered a manual transmission since 2012. Lamborghinni stopped in 2014.

Porsche is one of the few performance car companies that still offers a manual with a clutch.

I expect that driving a stickshift with a clutch is a skill that will be soon be about as useful as adjusting the horizontal/vertical hold on the TV. I was really good at that too, BITD. Fine tuning FTW.

Very helpful.

If/when I get a replacement for the Saturn, mrs datlas and I are going to have to discuss this. I would love to get another stickshift but she never learned how to drive one and her inability to drive my car sometimes poses problems. She will almost certainly want me to get an automatic-for-the-people car. Sad.

The Gazoo Corolla hatch is tempting, would probably have to take the front wheel off of the MTBs for transport though, so better keep at least one of the minivans.

If the used market keeps crashing, maybe cheap Miatas will start appearing again.

When we were in Flagstaff a little over a year ago, I thought it might be a nice place to live and retire. Thank you for convincing me otherwise.

17 days colder than normal/14 warmer. Now counting ability is too much to ask for here. Help.

A used car dealer tweeted yesterday about 1-year-old G-wagens dropping from $260k last year down to $190k this month.

I often appreciate that my wife will not drive my car. Makes for a harmonious relationship.

There is a perfect Saturn replacement on the list posted by Jonesy: Base model Imprezza sedan with manual:

Most might not even know you got a new car. Perfect for maintaining the thrifty reputation.

Worthy of consideration, but the Miata or Mini are likely more fun to drive.

That said, one of my bike friends has Subaru as a client and I believe has a "friends and family" deal that allows me to get one for 3% below sticker price.

Until I bought the Dodge, I'd never owned a car with an automatic. But when I bought it, I had been complaining for months about how manual transmissions are problematic in traffic, because everyone else drives automatics. This means traffic creeps, often not ever actually stopping, but often dropping below the speed you can go even in 1st. Back when every car had a manual, I imagine traffic moved in increments. What was killing me was traffic up a steep pitch on the way home, with a 4-way stop at the top. SO, Mrs. GJ told me if I bought a manual she'd kill me, because she was tired of hearing me ***** about it.

But I do sometimes miss it, especially because the shifting when you flick the shifter is anything but instantaneous.

I had a Subaru for at least 12 years, an Outback wagon. It was not particularly economical on gas, despite having a 4-banger. Maybe 5% better than the Dodge with it's 5.7L V8. I would only buy a Subaru with a manual because they went from standard automatics to a CVT.

Cannot argue that. Check out Mini repair costs and frequency before you buy one. I'd only own with a warranty.
