Because tightening the QR makes the play go away, and you've assured us the axle's not too long.
There are only a few places the play could be, and one is in the bearings. If you're CLOSE to zero play in the bearings, but not quite there, tightening QRs or TAs can tighten it up. This is why adjusting hubs is such a PITA with cone wrenches. You have to take the wheel out of the dropouts to adjust it, and you think you have it adjusted right, and you put it back in the dropouts and it's too tight. So you take it out, make a tiny adjustment, put it back in the dropouts and there's play. Lather, rinse, repeat.
When you rock the wheel, and you feel play, can you see one or the other end of the QR skewer moving relative to the dropout?

Question. This is my ignorance. What’s the purpose of a more aggressive stem if you still have spacers under it? Couldn’t you remove the spacers and put a less aggressive stem. This is not me being a smart ass, this is a legit question.

Fast forward 14 years, and I'm starting to find the reach forward a bit much, but liking the drop. I bought a 110mm stem. I THOUGHT the stem was a standard -12, but the bar ended up too high, so I got a -17 and the bar is same height and 1 cm closer, exactly where I wanted it.
If I put spacers above the stem, I'd have to decide whether to live with the aesthetics of a small smokestack, or have the steerer cut. As it is, I don't mind a few small spacers and I like the -17 stem.

Also, I tried it with spacers above the stem, but those pretty "Bianchi" labeled spacers have thick walls, which means the stem cap doesn't completely cover them, leaving an unsightly rim which is also surprisingly sharp.

It came originally, in 2007 when I was 50, with a 130 mm -17 and those spacers, which put the bar at the right height but 1cm too far away, so I replaced that with a 120mm, -17 stem of the same model.

Fair enough, I didn’t know if there was more to fitting than I thought I knew. I don’t know very much.
One of the guys on m team works at bike shop across the water. I reached out to him today for wheels and a stem. Both of what I want are at a “warehouse”, anyways I mentioned how my emonda stem was slammed and I wanted lower but at the same time don’t want to loser my Blender set up.
I sent him a picture, and he said that’s not slammed. I didn’t realize that washer could be removed.
He recommended this, I’m gunna see if trek can find me something before I order this.

To expand - Shimano introduced 130mm rear spacing when they introduced 8 speed Dura Ace back around 1991. They needed the extra 4mm for the extra cog. There were a few years when both 126 and 130 coexisted because lower level groups were still 7 speed, but that was all over before 2000. My 1994 Cannondale R500 came with 7 speeds, and 128mm spacing, so you could fit a 130 hub or a 126.

Another pizza ride today. It was so windy at my house I almost cancelled but we met at the less windy ride start and it was not a problem but it was pretty breezy toward the end, I had a vegetarian slice and it was pretty good.

Good thing we just had the furnace checked a couple weeks ago for its age (we’re looking at switching to a heat pump or geothermal this year). Everything looked good, but knowing my luck it’ll die on Friday night just as we drop below zero.
