Dumpster frame meets box o' parts

The 1983 Schwinn World Sport frameset was pulled from a garbage dumpster, stripped and spray painted. The saddle, grips, Sora shifters and FD are new and the rest is from the garage storehouse. The Sora 2x9 group is really nice, it's much smoother than I expected. The 700x35 Paselas on tough Mavic A319 rims will help tame the rough pavement and beach town riding its destined for. My friend wants to get back on a bike and this will definitely get him going; a happy N-1.

A totally functional but unplanned build lacking that je ne sais quoi. Next time.

Nice work !

Beautiful color, it works well with the black chain ring, calipers and derailleur

Amazing and accurate alliteration!
We've been close friends since 1976.

Nice job on build up and paint

That’s great that you can pass it on to a friend. I like that you used a traditional stem with the upright bars instead of a upslope stem. It’s a more C&V look imo. The paint looks pretty good; I was wondering if you did much stripping of the original paint and what brand spray paint you used. Any painting tips?

Doesn't it? Coincidentally I have also recently built a blue parts bin special, and came to the same conclusion: that the black accents work surprisingly well.

Stripped to bare metal, then all rattle can; 2K primer, Duplicolor Quasar Blue, 2K gloss clearcoat. It took about a month to cure completely.

My tip is awful - go pro powdercoating. I bet I spent $100 on paints and supplies and the finish is much less durable than pro. Secondary tip - if going rattle can, pick a color that has a Sharpie color for touch ups. Sharpie Metallic Blue is perfect for this one. 😉

The dude is back in the saddle!

Pretty much my same experience with rattle can paint

My couple of attempts at an acceptable home spray paint job ended up similar. Too much money, way too much effort for a paint job that only looked good for a couple of months, if that, before it began to chip.

I agree that it is best to leave it to the pros especially if you can find a good powdercoat for under $200 total. In the meantime, I have learned to appreciate the look of the well worn and distressed paint on vintage bike. Though I am still tempted to try a brush on paint job using flat black outdoor metal paint like for farm equipment and handrails (epoxy paint?) on a beater bike project.

Au contraire! And I'm not the only one that thinks that.

Schwinn World Sports were well made bikes. You probably noticed that the shorelines on the lugs were excellent for a bottom model in Schwinn's line up. Your version may have been too beat up to notice but the paint on the World Sports was excellent. And they topped that off with lug lining to highlight their carefully made brazed joints. The geometry on the bike is excellent as well. Giant wanted to be sure that they impressed Schwinn with good workmanship.

Then there is what you did with it. The paint and lug lining came out great. Components look just right on it as well. You turned a good bike into a gem. Good work.
